Should I transfer?
I’m currently a first-year college student, and I’m attending a college that is literally a thousand miles away from home. When I was applying for colleges, the only thing that mattered to me was how much my family would have to pay for my college. We weren’t financially secure, especially after COVID, so all I wanted for the sake of my family was to go somewhere that would be affordable. I ended up choosing the college I currently attend because of financial aid and nothing else.
Now that I’m here, I feel so unsteady. It’s my second semester in college, and they always say that the first semester is the worst, but it just feels like it won’t get better from here. I’ve taken my time to explore the college’s opportunities and the city around me, and it just feels like there’s nothing for me here. Being a POC at a predominately white institution has also made it really hard to adjust, especially since my hometown is so much more diverse than here. In my head, I feel like I’m just a long term tourist in this place. I miss my family, my friends, and my boyfriend a lot, and I’m realizing more and more that I want my future to be in my hometown.
Knowing what I know now, I’m wondering if I should transfer. I don’t know if it would be worth it to transfer and be closer to home if there is a risk of having less financial aid and having to be in college longer. The cost of traveling via car versus plane would definitely save me a lot of money, but that probably will be overwhelmed by a higher cost of tuition. A lot of people have been telling me that my problems might just be me having trouble adjusting to a completely new environment, but I’m not sure if that’s the case or if there is something more. I don’t really know what to do from here. Should I try to apply for a transfer or should I just stick it out and finish my education here? Any advice on how to make the best out of a situation you don’t want to be in?

I would definitely try to see your options for a college near your hometown. Maybe you'll be able to get a similar amount of financial aid. Have you asked your family and friends for their opinions on transferring? Maybe that would help you make your final decision. I don't think it will be a great choice to stay at a place that you don't enjoy. If you were to stay here, you wouldn't be very happy. I know you are considerate of your family's financial situation, but this college doesn't seem to be a place that would make you happy. Try looking into the situation more, and see if there is a possibility of going to a college near home with similar financial aid. Best of luck!

First, you said that your priority is the financial aid for the college. Now the college you in already satisfied your key condition. Which this might makes you feel more affinity with this college. And then you said you feel despondent about the environment of the college. And that might be the main reason why you think this school is not becoming for you. But this is the only problem you can figure out by yourself, to be realistic, if you can solve the financial problem and your missing about your family, your misery won't be there. So there is no consummate compromise in this case, you only can choose either sacrificing yourself or your family. If you think yourself can definitely earn the financial income back in the short-coming future, there is no problem of transferring, but if you want to be benign to your family's financial conditions, it's not that treacherous to continue studying in this college. But overall, personally, if I was you I would choose the path of continuing studying in the present college. Although you might feel little uncomfortable, pain can strengthen yourself, everybody needs to face it sometime in the life. But everything ups to you. You are still young, it is not a calamity, you still have much time to choose to struggle which are also things make your live colorful.
