Any Tips on Taking Notes?
Hello everyone,
So, as with almost everyone now. Courses are now online. For my current course, the instructor has put lessons in an Audio clip/video on YouTube. There aren't many written notes in the video. I'm not much of an audio learner. Does anyone have tips on what I should be writing down as notes in an Audio clip? How do I know what is the main point from what is being spoken about the topic?

Hello, @Jaeteuk, it’s nice (and a real honor) to finally chat with you! Thank you for your thoughtful replies to posts recently, they certainly didn’t go unnoticed :) You’ve asked a really good question here. Hmm... it’s tough to take notes on audio clips and videos, but you’ve got the right starting point by investigating anything that’s written in the video. In addition to copying the written notes in a video, I find it helpful to listen to the clip/video once and try to recall what I heard from it. If you can remember topics in some detail, chances are those topics are main ideas! Maybe a few notes on those topics might be helpful to write down? And, if you feel that something was particularly emphasized or repeated with more detail added, that might also be something to remember. And as always, remember that you can return to the clip/video if you ever need to be refreshed on details. I hope that helps a bit! @AdvocateHP, nice to meet you too! Same with you, you've given some very thoughtful responses to posts as well. I tend to say too much sometimes, once I start typing, my thoughts just keep coming; then, end up writing a few paragraphs. Thanks for your advice. I guess I'll need to listen to the clips more than once then. They're an hour long each!.. I just wish the instructor would give us actual notes.. The previous courses I've taken, although there were Audio Clips in some, but they were mainly powerpoint slides with written notes then have the instructor read them and elaborate on the points. Rather than showing a bunch of pictures, and talking about it with not many written notes shown.

Oh! A reply from the S&C superstar?! Well, I’m honored and full of gratitude! Thank you for the response, @Jaeteuk. Haha, I feel the same way - we both want to help people, and we end up saying so much once our minds get working! As long as it helps, I’m happy :) I do understand your situation, though, and I’m sorry that you’re learning in an unfamiliar format. But you seem very capable of adjusting to new circumstances and thriving in them! That said, I could try to add more to help you with these audio clips. Hmm... if the audio clips are that long, then I wouldn’t want you sitting for hours just to understand them! What I usually do with long clips is pause periodically to make sure that I understood the last few minutes. For example, assuming the clip is an hour long (60 minutes), you could take a break every 10 or 15 minutes (to split the clip into 6 or 4 sections) and see if you understood the previous section. You can use the same trick as before: try thinking about what you remember in detail. If anything seems fuzzy, then go back to the part that seems unclear and try getting some more details. I hope that helps a bit, but that’s only my approach to audio clips. Everyone has their own “best approach,” so feel free to pick and choose from my approach to find what works for you. Either way, I know you can do this :) If things really aren’t going well, though, feel free to reach out to a listener! Some listeners (me included!) are open to “study together” sessions, and a second pair of ears might be just what you need to understand these clips. Long story short, we’re all here for you! Rely on us if you need us.

You may be interested in the cornell note taking technique. It is proven to work and the technique I use. Split your page into a title, main points, key points and a summary of each topic.
