Making studying more fun

Hello everyone and happy Friday! I hope everyone is having a great Friday so far. I've been having a really great day so far and I recently took a big step to stand up for myself in a relationship. I think it was the right thing to do and I phrased my response well, and it's honestly such a relief. I have a lot of projects to work on though and I noticed that I wasn't as excited for it as I usually would be, so today I wanted to write a little bit about making studying and usually-tedious tasks more fun!

3 tips to making studying more fun:

1) Study with a friend or use study with me videos

Studying with a friend in real life might be hard right now in a pandemic. If you're allowed to go out, studying in a park while maintaining a nice distance can be a great way to motivate yourself to study! The main point of studying with a friend is to hold each other accountable, so be sure that you both agree to work for a certain amount of minutes before chatting about fun or casual things! If you are studying with a friend virtually through video chatting, it's great to find websites or apps to listen to music together! Studying with friends virtually can be safer during covid19, and also more convenient if you both live further away from each other.

If you can't find a friend to study with, that's no worries! Elloitsangela has great studywithme videos where she records herself studying to give the effect that you're actually "studying with her". Other YouTubers have these videos as well!

2) Keep yourself hydrated and have snacks

Studying isn't fun when we're dehydrated or just too tired to study. A good way to prevent this from happening is to keep your study snacks close by and keep a glass of water or iced coffee or tea near you. That way, you won't be getting up every 5 minutes to go find something to eat/drink! Having a snack reward system can also be a great way to reward yourself for every math question you complete or problem you answer!

3) Make it a game for yourself / compete against yourself

Making studying a game for yourself might be a broader concept, but there are many healthy ways to do this without overpressuring yourself! It's all about work trading in for a reward for yourself.

One way to play a "study game" with yourself is to see how long you can manage to stay focused for during the day and reward yourself afterwards with a really fun activity. For example if I were to do this, I could time the total amount I study between 6AM and 6PM, and if I exceed 5+ hours, I'll allow myself to watch two episodes of a TV show that I've been wanting to watch.

Discussion questions:

Do you find studying fun? Why so or why not?

How do you motivate yourself to study when it's extremely tedious?

Favorite snack item?

Do you find studying fun? Why so or why not?

Hmm... It honestly depends on what I'm studying. Generally, if I'm studying something for myself, I'll enjoy it. However, if I'm only studying for the sake of a grade, it's less enjoyable. I think it just comes down to whether I'm motivated by the results of my studying.

How do you motivate yourself to study when it's extremely tedious?

I generally think about the future benefits, both for my knowledge and for my character.

Favourite snack item?

It usually depends on my mood, so it varies from time to time. Right now, it's fruit pieces.

@TheGoodFairy

Fairryyyy <3 hi! how are you <3 Studying for grades isn't fun and as motivating as studying for yourself, I definitely agree with you! :) Future benefits is great, I actually do that too and visualize the college I want to get into and how happy I'd be there with the students and faculty (visualizing in a healthy way) and I'm glad you do that as well! Fruit pieces are greatttt I have to motivate myself to cut them and put a bowl together more often because I'm more tempted to just reach for a bowl of icecream these days. Thank you for responding! :)

Hello again!! This post is awesome and helpful - thank you!

Do you find studying fun? Why so or why not?

When Im not burned out or pressured under deadlines and stress - yes, very much! I like studying, and its frankly one of my top hobbies xD Im quite curious by nature, so its always great to earn new knowledge!

How do you motivate yourself to study when it's extremely tedious?

First Id have to release the stress first so it doesnt pile and blow everything up when I actually study :0 After that I try to focus and concentrate more than usual, mostly by removing distractions away.

Favorite snack item?

Dried fruits! 🍓

Hello Hydrangea!! How are you doing <3 Thanks for the compliment! Yes- It does seem like studying can be more enjoyable when it's not the most pressing matter and when we have more control over it. Omg same! Studying is one of my top hobbies as well, what are you trying to study these days? I keep missing out on time to study political philosophy and economic philosophy, but I will definitely be looking more into it soon after I write this. Your ways to motivate yourself to study are awesome, I have to work on de-stressing myself. Dried fruit is cool, I haven't had some in a while actually!

Im doing quite ok, thank you so much ☺️

These days Im just catching up on school stuff, so Id usually study maths + science subjects, but when Im burned out with those Id move on to reading some classic history!

Political and economic philosophies sound interesting! I was once a huge philosophy nerd, but its been a long time since Ive read about it that Ive forgotten most of what I learned - oh well! Maybe I should return one day~

Thank you again, @TheAtticusFinch! Take care ^^

Do you find studying fun? Why or why not?

It really depends on what subject I am studying as well as the study materials I have. I am a big history buff, so anything relating to history is extremely interesting to me no matter if it is 28 pages we have to read or if it is an interactive workshop. For classes like math or science, which I am not particularly good at, having a study buddy helps a ton.

How do you motivate yourself to study when it's extremely tedious?

I try to tell myself that once I finish everything then I won't feel so stressed. Plus, I know I won't have time to study later because of work if I don't study at certain times. I also like to make my surroundings as aesthetically pleasing as possible so that I will want to work. It might sound dumb, but putting on some nice jazz, making a nice cup of coffee in my favorite mug, and dressing up helps really helps me get in the mood to study.

Favorite snack item?

My favorite snack while studying is something healthy like nuts and fruit, or nuts and cheese. Something I can kind of mindlessly chew on really helps me focus as well for some reason. Gum, hot or iced tea, and coffee are also on my studying snack item list.

@Toast048

Hey Toast! I'm so sorry for the late reply, I'm here now though! Awhhh omg I wish I were a history buff!! I want to learn more history because I'm definitely a humanities-based person like you are. I absolutely would love to dive into a lot of deep reads on studies done, especially with sociology. I can't do math and science either, it's just too complicated for me so I try and study with friends on that one! It's not dumb at all that you would want to put on nice music and have coffee by you and make your environment nice. That's something I do and it's good because we're making our environment more study-friendly which can be more motivating for us! Yes, for sure same here the key is to have something to eat that can be pretty mindless. I love blueberries for that and also smoothies too!! :D Take care Toast. <33

Hi! First time here :)

Do you find studying fun? Why so or why not?

As someone said before, this will depend on the topic. For example, I studied my way through classes like Spanish just because I wanted to pass with a good grade; but I disliked it. On the other hand, I would have a good time doing math exercises while listening to music. I felt like my brain was working out in a good way.

How do you motivate yourself to study when it's extremely tedious?

Usually by last minute pressure, or my desire to pass the class & be done with it. I think this is how I worked my way through organic chemistry: be done with it, and knowing I had to study at least a week or two before if I wanted to survive.

Favorite snack item?

Chocolate. Best thing ever!

@relaxSea

Hey Sea! Sorry for the late reply <3 Yes for sure, I definitely agree that how "fun" studying depends on what you're studying. I dislike a lot of subjects too, like math, but can move through them all right with a good grade. Oh my, organic chemistry sounds so scary, but I'm so glad that you managed to push through it. I can really relate that you were just trying to survive the class :(( That was definitely me last year in 9th grade with almost all of my classes and I hope this year is better for both of us with some better study habits. Last-minute motivation is scary!! I hope you're able to have more time to work on what you need to do. Chocolate is so good!! I'm vegan, but accidentally bought milk chocolate and I've really been enjoying it lately. :) Take care Sea!

Okay soooo...

firstly, I usually enjoy studying when I am studying a subject of my choice and liking.

secondly, I motivate myself to study by giving myself small rewards such fun time with family, tv time, a chcolate etc.

lastly, my favourite snack is cheese slices or cubes !

Hi humankind!! :)) I love that you motivate yourself with small rewards, that's probably one of the best study tips out there! :) I do that for myself too and I honestly love using fun activities as rewards such as tv shows or YouTube videos on my watch later list. Awh I haven't had cheese slices or cubes in a while! I think I'll look for vegan options of that, thank you for replying and reminding me of that and I wish you a great week. :)
