Study Music

Sometimes studying is so much easier when you have background noise, sometimes when you have music. if you are anything like me, sometimes having Disney music can make a paper go by so much faster! I found an amazing gem on the internet that I want to share! It has 5 hours worth of music on it. That's enough music for you to study and then just chill afterward! it is also good for your study breaks, which are just as important as your studying!

You can check the music here

Feel free to share your Study Music here!

Music without lyrics is the best type of study music.

Research shows that language sounds (even in a foreign language) inhibits processing of other information. In a study where either English lyrics, foreign language lyrics, or no music was played as participants performed a basic letter reading and memorizing activity, participants performed best in the activity in the silent condition. They performed worst in their own language condition.

So while no music is preferred, listening to music without lyrics is best!

If you want to know why, it is because we are constantly unconsciously processing information in our surroundings. Even with garbled nonsense language sounds, our brains are still trying to process this auditory information and make sense of it, even if we are not consciously aware of it. This is also why we can hear someone say our name in a crowded room (cocktail party effect) even if we weren't initially paying attention to that conversation in the first place. An emotionally attached important word (your name!) was said. Your unconscious attention was just brought to conscious awareness of something that was said!

@BurningEmber

Sorry it took me a bit to get back to you.

Googling the "irrelevant speech effect" (which examined the impact nonsense syllables had to make sure that it wasn't only native language that had an impact) would bring up some good results of some of the research I'm referring to.

Or the music research I was referring to can also be found here: https://www.gwern.net/docs/music-distraction/1989-salame.pdf

It's old, but having replicated the research myself, I found similar results.

@BurningEmber Music is such an amazing thing. I can only lipsync because I can't sing to save my life lol. But some My Chemical Romance with Avenged Sevenfold for me can speed up any task and time just flies by fast.
