Study barriers and how to tackle them

Hey everyone and happy Tuesday! Sorry for the late post- I have been a bit busy with things lately! I finished debate camp last week and I have training this week on healthy relationships and teen dating violence with this domestic violence agency! It's extremely interesting and I just finished my first day and I am looking forward to the next session/ last session on Thursday.

I wanted to talk a bit about study barriers today and how to find different ways to approach them!

Study barriers are road blocks that happen when we study. There are many different types of study barriers and there are also many different ways to deal with study barriers! Study barriers might not be an issue right now since most are in summer break, but they can be an issue when school starts back around August or September.

1) Identify what your study barrier is.

This is the most important step! To solve any problem, it's first important to figure out where the problem is arising from. If you can, take a second to understand and realize why you've been struggling with school. Are you having problems concentrating for long? Are you procrastinating too often? Is your barrier because of your external surroundings or your internal feelings about the issue that you're studying? Come to terms with this barrier(s) and accept that this is a problem.

2) Tackle the study barrier.

It sounds obvious to address the problem after we've figured out what it is, but we often try to distract ourselves from the issue and try and ignore it. An example of this can be when we've received a bad test score. Although we know what our study barrier is, for example it could be having last-minute study habits, a lot of us decide not to do anything about it. Learning from our mistakes and getting over our study barriers is crucial! In this case, tackling the study barrier may be figuring out a study schedule so that we would be able to study a few days before the day of the test. For other scenarios, it can be helpful to look on YouTube for some productivity YouTube videos. Figuring out your system of how you want to address your barrier is a creative process, but be sure it's being done at the end!

3) Maintaining the system you choose and holding yourself accountable.

After figuring out the system that you want to place to tackle your study barrier, it's important that you keep consistent with it! Referring back to the example I used in step 2, we can consistently study a few days before any given test to keep up the habit. A mistake others can make in this process is forgetting to keep consistent with their systems, which can lead to the mistake repeating itself later down the road. A great way to hold yourself accountable to practicing these systems is to share them with a friend! Having a friend hold you accountable for your studies is a great way keep your study system in check as well!

No worries for the late post! I also debate, do you do British Parlimentary style debates? I've benn debating for 4 years and I think that it's really interesting.

1) What are some of your study barriers and how do you think you can better tackle them?

I think that my most common study barriers includes procrastination and I also hate it when I get a bad mark on a test or assignment and I kind of shove it down and try to ignore it. I think that I could tackle my habit of procrastination by having a journal of daily and weekly tasks and goals that I need to complete that way I can't have an excuse to push it to the next day or try to forget about it. For my other study barrior, I think I just need to hold myself accountable, I'm working on that right now but it could use a lot more work!

2) What's your favorite stationery item/school supply?

I looooooove stationary. I always feel relaxed in stationary stores. I think my favorite stationary item would be my pencil crayons. I love art and I love doodling so this pencils crayons have a safe place on my heart...and in my locker!

3) Have you ever traveled to any place in particular? If so, where and how was your experience? If not, where would you like to travel and why?

I've travelled to many places with my family. I think my favorite one would be England and New York. I love big cities, I love the little shops along the narrow, twisted roads and I love the little lights that glimmer out of the apartments when it's nightime. I live in a town in Canada and while we do have Toronto, it's still a little different.

Not really, keep up the good work! I really appreciate all of the posts.

Sending hugs and warm wishes to everyone. Stay safe! ❤❤❤

Hey oxy!! British Parli sounds like a college format in my area which is different to Highschool parli? Omg that's so cool, we should def have a convo about debate one day xD I have been doing it for a year and I really love it. It's certainly interesting when you come across some.. unique.. opponents! Awh, I'm super glad that you went super in depth with your study barrier and it seems like you have a good plan as to how to tackle them. I agree, procrastination is a killer and I'm really glad that you are going to try and hold yourself more accountable in the future! Before corona, I had a similar problem a while ago and I would go to cafes with my friends. Sad I can't do that for a while :( omg I love stationery too!! It's a guilty pleasure since I try and go paperless, but it's just so irresistible to purchase?! Woah, I think I might own pencil crayons but I just don't know what they look like. Omg oxy I think we're the same people- I want to go to England and New York and I feel like I would love those narrow twisty roads you're talking about. Thank you for the compliment and the hugs, hope you stay safe too! :) <3

1) What are some of your study barriers and how do you think you can better tackle them?

I guess sometimes I find it hard to concentrate and get distracted so easily :/ as for how to tackle this...to be fair its still something Im still trying to figure out.

2) What's your favorite stationery item/school supply?

Hm, just pens I guess, especially cute pens with sharp tips :p

3) Have you ever traveled to any place in particular? If so, where and how was your experience? If not, where would you like to travel and why?

I once went out of city with my school and we visited a local mountain (we didnt hike though - we rented a jeep). It was a refreshing place, I bought a small bouquet of Edelweiss too :). But I got lost for a moment there xD

@Hydrangea03

Hey Hydrangea <3 I think struggling to concentrate and getting distracted easily is super common and such a valid problem to have! I struggle with this sometimes as well and I find it really helpful to try and set up a timer to concentrate and remove all the possible distractions! :) <3 It might not work for everyone, but I hope you're able to figure out how to tackle it. Oh my, getting lost up there must have been sorta scary but that sounds like so much fun!! I'm glad you were able to go there and have fun with your school. Thank you so much for the tip, I'll try and do some research into how I can write something to what you suggested. :) And I hope you don't feel dumb because you're certainly not :o <3 take care and thanks for responding!

@TheAtticusFinch Hello! I am new to this community and would like to say thank you for this very informative post!

1. My most prominent study barrier is procrastination. I procrastinate a lot. It causes me so much anxiety when I finally complete something that is due I feel SO much better. I think I can tackle this barrier just by making myself get up to do it. As I said, I feel so relieved and good about myself when I complete something. The hardest thing for me is just getting up and starting. Some times I have trouble focusing, but I find the Pomodoro technique to be very helpful with keeping me focused. I love to complete my school work while watching a Pomodoro study with me on YouTube. It makes me feel like I'm on a study date with a friend cheeky.

2. My favorite school supply is my planner. I love my planner just because it helps me be more organized and so that I can see what is on my plate for the day/week. I especially love checking off things that I have completed and watch as the things I need to complete decrease.

3. I have traveled across Europe with my sister when I was 15. She was stationed in Germany, and I spent the entire summer living with her and visiting different countries. I absolutely love Germany and the Germans, they are such nice and clean people who sincerely care for their environment. I wouldn't trade that summer for the world, I grew so much as a young woman that summer.

4. I would love to see a post about reaching out to teachers. I find myself worried about reaching out to teachers when I start to fall behind, which in turn makes me get even more behind. Again, I am so excited to be part of this community,smiley and thank you for this post!

@Toast048

Hi Toast!! Welcome to our community, I'm so glad that you found us and are with us. :) Thanks for the compliment and super good to hear that you enjoyed the post. Ahhhh I relate a lot to what you said. Although I'm not the biggest procrastinator in my age group, I have felt that anxiety before from procrastinating for too long and the relief of stress after you get something done is totally understandable. Yes! I think the best solution to it is just really disciplining yourself to get stuff done and really setting good deadlines for yourself. And omg I love YouTube study with me's too! I definitely recommend love elloitsangela and also Hara studies! :) Planners for the win! I love my planner too, although it's definitely a bit of mess 100% of the time. I used to bullet journal and still sort of do, and it's a great way to decrease stress and I definitely get the feeling of satisfaction when I cross off things! I want to go to Europe so badly and I've heard a lot of great things about Germany and how they handle things too!! :) Thank you so much for the suggestion, I'll start working on it whenever I can. <3 Again, welcome to the community and thanks for responding!

I will definitely be looking at those study with me YouTubers!! I've tried to do bullet journaling but I couldn't keep up with it and found just writing down the things that I need worked just as well. I do love the aesthetic of bullet journals though, and love watching YouTube videos as well cheeky I am ready to hop over these study barriers 💪🏽

1) What are some of your study barriers and how do you think you can better tackle them?

I think that my major study barrier is fluctuating motivation. One month I'll be the most driven student ever, and the next month I'll be extremely burnt out and motivation-less. I think a good way to tackle this is to maybe make a list of my motivations whenever I am motivated so that I can look back at them and get myself motivated later.

2) What's your favourite stationery item/school supply?

I absolutely adore stationery! I always feel relaxed in stationery stores or stationery sections of stores like DAISO. I think my favourite stationery item would be felt pens. They're super fun to write with, and they can look really cute too!

3) Have you ever travelled to any place in particular? If so, where and how was your experience? If not, where would you like to travel and why?

I've travelled to many places with my family, though a lot of the travel was when I was young so I can't really judge them all on an even playing field. One of the vacations I do remember that I loved is my vacation to Australia. I experience so much there, from the city life of Melbourne to the rainforests of Cairns to the beautiful Sydney Opera House and so much more! It was amazing!

@TheGoodFairy

Hey GoodFairy (again) <3 hehe. I understand and have already responded to something you said earlier about motivation, but I truly think it's not your fault that you sometimes feel motivation-less. :) It's bound to happen to all of us, especially when you often overwork yourself. I think making a list of what motivates you is a fantastic idea, I should do that soon too!! I adore stationery as well and I'm obsessed with literally everything form Daiso as well!! It's very well priced and all very cute as well. Wow, I haven't met many people who've been to Australia before! :O I'm glad you enjoyed it and remember it. Take care Fairy <3
