Studying tips :)
Hey guys!
I'm not sure if I've put it in a right thread but I was kind of clueless! I wanted to ask if you have any tips on studying? I'm having such a hard time motivating myself and concentrating on work :(
Thanks!
Hi all,
Just wanted to add some suggestions
- Think of the big picture. If I obtain this.. I can.. For instance, if you know what you want to do in the future with your studies, try and visualize you already being there and the feelings you will have when you accomplished it (e.g. happiness, feeling proud).
- Make a realistic plan and work backwards. What I mean is: if you know there's a deadline somewhere, set it, then work back. For instance with a paper. When should you be finished with the first draft? And when is the deadline for the revision of your draft? Break it down. Work-break down structures can help in that regard, if you make for instance a 3 monthly one, you can easily make weekly to do lists out of them.

I agree with the others; you should have some spare time. So plan for 60% of your time. You need time to relax, think things over. And if you plan for that, it makes you less guilty AND more creative!
Aurora dat was a good point about future success motivation.. Thnx for d post
Hey aeva,
I usually trust making good notes during lecture. If you have skipped few classes or you were bored of making notes. You can take notes from your friends.
Before starting to study for an exam,I plan a time to cover my material ,books for references, your lecture notes, stick notes and highlighter.
First I go through my notes to remember what I went through the lecture...I take a break of 30 mins after studying for 1 hour straight.During this 30 minsI indulge in snacks, walk, meditate or listen to music
Then after the break I go through referrence materials.I highlight important points anduse sticky notes if (I have a doubt / need another research and write down its source)
You might have to plan in a way that you don't burn out and when you feel that you are exhausted take a break. Before every break I usually revise in my mind to go through what I read through...and check what I have missed
After a good hour of study ..The next day when I have to sit to study I revise by making bullet points to remember or draw what follows next if I have to understand a process...So that I can refer during my exams..
Just remember that while studying its important to have a bottle of water ..So that you drink it every now and then...:)
I hope this helps...I usually go through my revised notes in the end...
Figure out your study style. If you like doodling, try the colored pencil and visual cues. If you find yourself tapping your foot or pencil or fidgeting a lot, try moving while you study. You can also talk out loud for important points or rewrite ideas in a different way.
ok i will definitely try it out . thanks for the advice..
Hello Aeva
When i study i place a huge emphasis on just reading through the material many times. In contrast when iintensely study i tire out much faster and don't necessarily remember more than just reading.
Hi aeva,
Although I'm a terrible student myself, here are what I found useful for me:
- Go exercise when you are tired instead of trying to sleep. Sweating out somehow refreshes you as well
- Find out how much time you can focus before you get tired, then stop studying whenever that time has reached. This link may help!https://www.magicworkcycle.com/
- If you don't revise you are going to forget, however revising everything you learn every time you study is not optimal use of time too. It can also be very troublesome to schedule out which chapters you are going to revise each time. Thus, why not make use of a computer to help you decide?
There are spaced-repitition programs like Anki which you can make use of. They are like flash cards based program with a powerful feature, they quiz you on stuffs you are most likely to forget everyday.
So add your questions and answers to Anki, let Anki quizzes you and base on your resultsAnki decide when to ask you the same question again, 4 days later or 20 days later.
Wow. Dat was really awesome. It s helpful no doubt. Thanks for the share.. Lol im a very bad student myself lolz..
Hello again
Was thinking about some other suggestions just now.
What can also work if you are a visual thinker and you have to remember sequences is visualize it in a place you know. For instance, I usually take my house. So in my mind I'd go through the house and label it. So the door would be the first thing to associate something with, then the hall, kitchen, so on.
Reading it out loud with emphasis might work too if you need to remind chunks of texts all at once.
What you described is memory palace. That's really useful too though I gave up on it as I'm too lazy to think of new places to "peg" things
