The Feynman Technique and how to use it :)
Hey everyone and happy Tuesday! I hope everyone is having a good and steady start to their week so far. I had a rocky ending to last week but I'm hoping (by the time this is posted) that I will be able to fall back into the groove of getting things done and working hard on the things I care about.
I was looking through the past forum posts that I've created and I noticed that I have never talked about the Feynman Technique! In short, teach what you are learning to someone else. I'm going to go through it step-by-step to explain how it works!
Background:
The Feynman technique was named after Richard Feynman, a Nobel Prize winner and contributed to science in many different ways. He was known to be also a great teacher and was great at explaining his incredibly complex concepts to his students. But, you don't have to be a physicist to use his technique to help you and your homework! The idea of explaining what you are learning to someone can be used for a variety of subjects and multiple different purposes!
Richard Feynman quote: "The first principle is that you must not fool yourself- and you are the easiest person to fool."
Steps to using the Feynman technique!
Step 1) Write the name of the technique, equation, concept, or whatever that you're learning on the top of the paper.
Step 2) Explain the concept in simple English (words) or whatever language you speak. Explain it as if you're explaining it to a five-year-old! If, needed, draw out examples or practice equations so that you're constantly challenging yourself to run through the steps!
Step 3) Look into your explanation process and look for places that you're unsure or shaky on. Review the materials needed to either memorize these processes that you are unsure of or take further action to study them!
Step 4) Pinpoint any complicated terms and challenge yourself to simplify them. Look through your explanation and see if you can simplify it so that it's easier for you to understand.
Tip: Challenge your assumptions by asking yourself "why?" like a kid does. 😃

1) What is your favorite technique you use to review material that you need to go over? Do you have any thoughts on the Feynman technique that you would like to share or could you see yourself using this technique in the future?
I don't usually have a set technique when I'm reviewing material, I usually just look through and memorize. I think I will certainly adopt the Feynman technique though, because it certainly seems effective!

My favourite lunch food/meal to eat is definitely sushi 🌺~

Hey Fairy! I'm so sorry this reply is coming in so late. I'm glad you're going to look into trying out the Feynman technique. For me, skimming through sometimes didn't work and I hope it works out for you when you try explaining it! Sushi is so good!!! I don't know if vegan sushi exists, but I definitely have had vegan shrimp before so I have hope I will be able to have sushi one day again xD Take care and I hope you have a good day!

I use the 3-day technique (that I invented myself - lol!). Here's how it goes:
Three days before the exam - I'd study the textbook to understand the details of the materials
Two days before - I'd read my notes to review what I learned from the textbook and do some practice questions, and go over again the materials I didn't get when I studied them in the textbook
One day before - Review everything!
The Feynman technique sounds so brilliant, I'll definitely give it a try, especially as I often have difficulties in understanding too :)
2) What's your favorite lunch food/meal to eat?
Fried rice!!! Or soup, hehe~

Hi Hydragea! I'm so sorry for the late reply and ou your 3-day technique sounds really cool and I bet it helps you a lot! It sounds a bit rushed, but I'm really glad you're able to study so much in 3 days! I'm glad you're going to give the Feynman technique a try! Fried rice is indeed nom nom, but soup is also nom nom as well :o

Ohh the 3-day technique works on multiplies - if there are two bulky materials, for example, Id be reviewing it 6 days prior to the exam!
