Hey guys.

I’m now studying in Hong Kong, year 2 student. I’m applying for an exchange to the United Kingdom next year.

I’ve always been excited to go on a exchange, wanting to travel around the world. However, ever since I’ve got into university. My depression and anxiety have worsen a lot. Now, I’m not sure if I should continue to go for the exchange.

I feel like I have separation anxiety with my family. I once stayed in the dorm for a week and I felt so bad that no one was there beside me. I can’t imagine how am I going to live alone in a foreign country for half a year. Not to mention that going on an exchange costs a lot.

Please let me know your thoughts. Thank you!

When we have always lived at home with our parents, it really is difficult when they are not around 24/7. What were your initial thoughts in wanting to do the exchange, other than wanting to travel around the world? List out some pros and cons in regards to the exchange. Then, weigh it out to see if this is a good time for you to go for the exchange.

I'm not too sure how exchange students are like and if it's the same worldwide. I knew someone who went through an exchange program in Japan, from Canada, and there was a family that took him in as homestay. The cost he paid for was basically for the accommodation provided by that family.

I know that as someone with depression and anxiety, when we enter into University, at most times, it gets worse. Especially when we are studying away from our hometown, not everyone is strong enough to face it on our own. Which will lead to a worsened state. It is important that we have healthy outlets and support through the tough times. If you feel you are not in the right state of mind to go for the exchange now, maybe wait another year? Allow yourself to get better mentally first, work on your separation anxiety, then think about the exchange program once you are more stable and ready for the adventure.
