Student Support Check-in
October 8 ~ October 15 2023
Hello, Lovely Student Support Community! Welcome to our weekly check-in.
Hey beautiful student support community! How are we all doing? I can not believe that it is October all ready! I am half way through my midterm 2 weeks and I have not been getting the grades that I wanted. I have been working hard and studying but it has not been translating to the grades nicely. I know that I always preach to my members how grades don't define you but it's sometimes hard to extend that courtesy to yourself. I was having an interesting conversation with a someone on friday about when I was homeschooling. I absolutely love learning and education but in the past couple of years since coming to university the stress, pressure, and fear of failure consumes me. I think that for me at least school has become about collecting grades. I read my books and study so that I can do well on the exam, not because I want to learn the material. I am here pursuing higher education because I want to learn more about our world and people, not because I need to get straight As. I hope that as I continue my journey, I will change my mindset around why I am doing this so that I can enjoy school and hopefully that will help translate to my grades eventually. Maybe some of you will understand where I am coming from and I want you to know that you are not alone. If you are in the middle of exam season I wish you the best of luck. For you all, What's been going on in your life? I would love to hear updates. I hope you all are managing through and have a good week ahead. We are always here for you <3

Hello,
I am a University student in my second year of my fine arts degree and my end-of-year exhibition is coming up and I’ve basically procrastinated this entire year. We’re meant to document our explorations and research onto a website, but I always end up leaving it right till last minute. I told myself last year that I would pick up the slack this year and fell proud of my work, but that hasn’t necessarily been the case. It’s hard to find any validity struggling in an art degree when there are others working diligently on much harder degrees and not struggling at all. I know I have the capabilities to do more and achieve greater things, I just let my insecurities and the negative thoughts get to me and everything (finances, living situation, job commitments, university deadlines, relationships, past issues) all collapses around me and it’s feels like I’m not doing enough. I apologize for the long read, but I thought this would be a pretty solid introduction without leaking any personal information. I’m new and joined last night and after talking with listeners and group discussions I feel much better this morning x I’ve made my bed in the first time in 3 months and I’m about to start showering regularly x Please feel free to give me any advice or anything is nice x I hope everyone is doing well for exams and keeping it together
@BrownEye777
Hey hey brown, its lovely to see you, Thanks so much for joining our check in this week. And a warm welcome to cups <3
Firstly congratulations for for making your bed and showering today. Its always good to celebrate the seemingly small tasks in life because sometimes we just cant do them, so really awesome job for that,
I can relate to your struggles with procrastination and lack of motivation. its sounds like a cool end of the year project but I can imagine that its really stressful not feeling prepared for it. Its great when we can learn form our mistakes but sometimes we just dont and thats simple okie, there are alot of things that might prevent us form reaching those new goals like staying on top of things. while certainly we know that we have the capabilities of things the busy messy world often gets in the way. There is so much to do and it just gets so overweleming. I know that its frustrating when you cant live up to all that potential but go easy on yourself okie, you are doing the best you can with the circumstanse that are right now. You are doing your best and that is enough.
All we can do is focus on the now and how we move forward from it. It can feel even harder to start when we feel that we should have started a long time ago and now there's this big thing we must do. Its feel like your standing at the base of a huge mounitan and dont know where to start. Just map out the big things and break it down, make schedule of what you will do each day so that you have something to turn in. That might be where I would start. And trust me I have been there wayyyy to many times too.
The thing is that your struggles are valid, You can not compare what you are doing to others and how others are doing. How you experience the world is going to be completely different from every one else. If you are going through the same things or if you are going through completely different things. all that matters is that it sounds like you are struggling and thats okie, its not nice to be struggling but that is whats happening and we can work with that. You no need to put yourself down about it, comparing yourself to others only makes you feel even worse when are already not feeling good. plus I think that many people struggle you just dont always see it. SO many people struggle with procrastination and finding motivation. You are not alone in that. I hope that you have a great week ahead

❀Whats been going on in your life? ❀
I’m a freshman in high school currently and last month, my exams weren’t great as expected but I’m working harder.
❀What has been taking up your headspace lately??❀
I’ve been thinking a lot about myself lately. (Not in a selfish kinda way) but I’ve discovered i have social anxiety. That has been fine for me.
❀How do you show kindness to yourself? ❀
Self care! I’ve been listening to music more often because I love it. I’ve getting more sunlight and a bit more exercise.
Hey hey Keith! thanks so much for joining our checkin this week!
For your problems in college, I understand what you are passing. It was a hard journey for me in my college, I was like a high school student not a college student, I needed some guidance in my studies because studying school subjects isn't like studying college subjects, and also the professors were not always fair in putting grades like the teachers, for them the first impression was important and it was impossible to give a good impression. I fought for my future, I don't think that I did will because my BSC grades were bad, but my father convinced me to do post studies to inhance my opportunity in finding a job.
I did and now I have to make my MA thesis, but after a lot of drops in my life and my father's death I can't write a word in the thesis. I feel that my life has stopped and I can't move it a millimeter.
@DinaElwy
Hey Dina,
lovely to see you again, and thanks for joining this checkin,
Im sorry that college was so hard for you. College and high school are two very different games. ITs defining challenging with the lack of support that colleges offer and is a big difference from the very structured high schools. IM sorry to hear that the grading was not always fair. It sounds like your father had great influence on your life and wanted to support you the best he could. I am so sorry to hear about his passing. I lost my dad too, and it really messed me up. My life fell apart after for so many years. School was no longer a prioirty and much else. I am sorry that you are struggling so much too after his passing. losing someone you love can make is so hard to move on and do big things like your thesis, please show yourself grace kindness and patience, you are doing the best you can. Here for you always <3 sending you strength
