Waiting for sober happiness
I need advice or encouragement I guess.
I have other people in my life who laugh so easily and it hurts me because I just can't seem to laugh while sober.
Same thing with truly smiling- I just don't have it in me.
I know I'm depressed and I know eventually if I keep staying sober it'll help regulate my dopamine and seratonin levels and I might just start enjoying things in life other than drinking, but I can only survive so many numb days in row until I cave and binge drink.
And then I'll hate myself and try to get sober and the cycle repeats.
How do you not cave to drinking after all the sober numbness and depression? How do you convince yourself in the moment to not drink, to wait it out in the hopes of some happier future you?? I was trying to at least get to 30 days sober, but even a week sober is a horrific struggle.

My heart goes out to you.
I feel your pain.
Thanks for your honesty and sharing your vulnerabilities.
Its hard for you to imagine being happy without being drunk.
Try to change this association and link your happiness to something else.
Take it one day at a time re the drinking, one step at a time will make you feel less overwhelmed and alone 💜💕 Rooting for you 💜

Update- im getting better on not drinking. my streaks of being sober are getting longer and my desire to drink is less, even though there isnt much happiness to be found lol. like i havent touched alcohol for almost a month now- coping with life the good old sober way (aka crying like a ***). thanks for taking the time to respond.

That's great, I'm actually so happy for you and proud!

@determinedSea4370 Thanks for sharing what you are going through. I think you are brave to strive to make such a positive and challenging life change. It sounds like you have historically felt "happy" when drinking and are having a hard time experiencing that or a similar emotion without drinking. I wonder if finding some other ways to boost your mood might help? I know for some people, meditation or mindfulness and going for a walk seems to help boost their mood and give them a sense of peace. I don't know if those things are an answer for you, but I wonder if you could find some sober activities that could at least help give you a sense of peace, if not happiness. Thanks again for sharing your journey here. I am wishing you the very best as you strive to maintain sobriety.

Maybe you can help me. I'm currently in a relapse period after 5 months of sobriety and all I can remember is how much better I felt after not drinking and desperately want that again. I hope you will stay sober and enjoy the sunlight and every moment of the day without alcohol. Don't take that first drink again, please.
