What is better, being spontaneous or making preparations?
While being able to respond spontaneously to some situations can open doors to new perspectives and experiences, sometimes good preparation and planning can be of great advantage.
Let’s assume you’re going on a trip. You make sure that you have enough money to go, then before you leave you pack your suitcase. You might think that the weather could change, so you pack clothing for warm and cooler days. You might be on medication, so you make sure that you have enough for the time you are away from home. You might also visualize situations which could occur and how to prepare best and what to take with you that could help in those situations.
Now, we can apply the same concept to our emotions - getting prepared for an emotional challenge. What are the tools and skills you really need to cope with your emotions?
Here are some things I find quite helpful to learn about and have for rainy days in my head.
I believe preparation starts with training our nervous system to stay calm. This can be done by
Meditation, formal (sitting) or informal like walking meditation, yoga, breathing exercises
Healthy food, making sure your nerves get the vitamins they need like vitamin B
Getting enough sleep
What do you do to keep your nervous system healthy and your emotions stable?
Another very important part is to learn skills so we can be prepared and reduce stress ahead of time. It is more than having a safety plan. It is about what we need to do and how we need to prepare for unanticipated challenges we may face.
You might think about an upcoming situation that gives you discomfort, but is tolerable when you just imagine it right now.
Relax with a deep breathing exercise, music or what helps you best.
Then think about the details of that challenging situation. What kind of uncomfortable emotions come up?
Write down everything you notice and any ideas you have about how you could cope with the situation and your emotional reactions.
Make a plan about how you could respond. Include what to say and how to say it, what to be aware of in our thoughts, what happens before we become angry or irritable, and what to do to avoid having a full blown emotional outburst
-
Relax again by following your breath or with a deep breathing exercise, music or what helps you best.

How are you currently dealing with upcoming challenges? I have to plan ahead. I have a plan A B and C and they may not happen but it helps me know I am prepared for a couple thinkgs.
What are you doing to manage your emotions? I monitor my thoughts and keep an eye on what is coming up. If I start to raise my voice or feel frustrated I call a time out on myself until I calm down.
What ideas do you have about how you might improve your abilities to cope with emotions? Just keep practicing.

Making yourself feel safe can avoid anxiety, Nice that you are aware of your emotions and take a step back when needed.
I prefer to plan ahead, know where I am going and when I will be home. I can do spur of the moment, but I Al the minimum need to know when I will be home. Because when I do return home I need time to unwind and relax, the longer I am out , the longer it takes to unwind.
for instance , if I planned on going to a hockey game and I am there and it suddenly goes into overtime, I start getting stressed as I know the latter I am out the longer to unwind and I get upset knowing I will than be up all night.
@exuberantStrawberries9544 plans are great but life seems to have a way of disrupting them. Yes I do plan but also prepare to meet the unexpected.

This is a totally new concept for me. I'll have to think on this one. I just keep in mind this one thing... Be Kind. Be kind to others, and be kind to myself. If I feel triggered, I just back away regroup and review what I could have done better and resolve to do better next time. I can't see making this so complicated. Just my humble opinion. Also, I just remind myself when I'm upset, to keep breathing, and to relax. If you stop or restrict your breathing, you deprive your brain of oxygen and it won't function as well as you may need it to in the moment. So, I keep breathing. Thank you for posting.
@EmbStitcher33 you are doing fine. There are no right or wrong answers. So glad you stopped by and shared in this thread. Hope to see you again soon.

😊 Thank you. Wanted to post but was kinda lost so I just posted what came to mind...
Feeling lost is kinda the norm 4 me. Haha 🤪
@positiveRiver9935
I'm very sorry to hear that feeling lost become a kind of norm to you. What are situations you feel less lost or even prepared in life?
Well I never ever feel prepared in life but I guess times when I feel less lost could be when I'm at doctor's office for several appointments that I have each month that's usually the only time that I feel like I have everything together and like I have what I need right there with me is when I'm at the doctor's office people there have really kind of become like friends to me because I've always got along so well with everyone
@EmbStitcher33 sometimes just typing from the heart is the best way.
I like both.
What do I do to keep my nervous system healthy. I journal, eat healthy and go for long walks.
How am I coping with challenges. I'm doing better. Taking it one day at a time for right now.
What am I doing to manage my emotions. I'm taking breaks often getting enough sleep. When I do feel stressed I do deep breathing and walk.
