Free yourself or Getting out of the Mental Loop
If only I would have left early enough nothing would have happened. If only I would have told him. If only the bus would have come on time. If only I knew they would accept me I could calm down now. If only there would be someone I know.
Nothing is more draining to me than worrying or thinking about the same thing over and over again. It simply does not help us. What sadly happens though is that we get caught up in a mental loop which intensifies our feelings of worry and regret more and more and over time will cause sleep problems and difficulties to manage our daily tasks.
We need to get out of that mental loop and see the bigger picture again. But how?
Remind yourself that these intrusive thoughts are just that: thoughts. If we do not cling to them they will pop like bubbles.
Try to redirect your attention from your thoughts to something important that requires your focus or something you want to get absorbed into, like a hobby or a walk outside.
Do a mindful exercise like meditation, yoga or tai chi. When we are more self aware it is easier to monitor symptoms and mood-shifts and take preventive steps for getting caught up in negative thoughts.
It can also help to get the thoughts out of your head and onto a piece of paper or in a journal.

How are you dealing with repeated unwanted thoughts?
Mental stress caused by excessive rumination or worries can lead to serious health problems. If you have serious, long-term problems with negative thinking and feel depressed, see your doctor or talk to a therapist if you feel they are related to any mental challenges.

i just couldn’t let go of anger. It feels addicting to hate someone but it’s so wrong for me and other people. I need to forgive myself and the people who hurt me

Very helpful notes! I needed to read this for sure. I journal and talk to who I can and have two therapists...but sometimes I forget or don't even realize when I'm having an intrusive thought. It's driving a wedge between myself and my husband because I can't always tell what's just a thought/feeling and reality.

It must be confusing not being sure whether what you think corresponds to reality or whether it is something that has its origin in the past like feelings which are based on past events. Something I find helpful for me is to ask myself questions like
1. What is the situation that I'm stressed or worried about?
2. Am I thinking or imagining and am I adding something that is not really there?
3. What makes me think the thought or feeling is true?
4. What makes me think the thought or feeling is not true?
I hope this helps.
