Health, Wellness and Fitness Practices
Everyone approaches mental health in different ways. It does help me to see what other people are doing to cope with their challenges.

@soulsings
Thanks for yet another great post. I live where it is cold for 5-6 months of the year so in the past few years I've been doing everything possible to escape from the cold. Some of the things I do to keep warm include doing light therapy, turning on my car so it is warm before I get in, electric clothing/blankets, and hot yoga. It's not Cancun, but I'll take it! ☀️
What are some of the practices that you do soulsings?
@Espejo it is cold here 5-6 months also. I do a lot of youtube videos. 5 minute Tai Chi has 8 modules. I enjoy that and it helps energize me. I also do Palouse Yoga. Yoga helps me feel good in my body.
Volunteering here at 7cups also helps me.
@soulsings
Palouse Yoga? 5 minute Tai Chi videos? I think I'll check them out 😊
Definitely with you about volunteering on 7Cups too 🌼 Hope you are staying warm
@soulsings I really realized how important sleep is for our mental health, so I really try to get as much sleep as I can. I know exercise is really good too, but I tend to be a little lazy lol. I need to go back to the gym because once I'm in the routine, I really do enjoy it. It's just starting that's hard! What about you Soul?
@fruityPond7887 I practice slow motion walking. It increases my awareness of my body and makes moving easier and my body more relaxed.
@soulsings That’s interesting! I’ve never heard of that 😮 Is it just trying to be more aware of your surroundings when you are walking?
I stopped drinking in 2018, it was mainly always social drinking anyway, but my main problem is smoking cigarettes. My grandma died from lung cancer and my mom’s death had a contribution of COPD besides heart failure … I need to quit smoking. I have tried many times but probably bc I have a seizure problem and take other meds, the Nicoderm patches, etc give terrible side effects. It’s so hard bc the smoking is my crutch basically. Happy, sad, mad, bored, after eating .. but I need an all natural remedy! Any suggestions?
@TransAm85 I am sorry that stopping smoking is a challenge for you. I am not sure what will work for you but here are things that helped me quit when I was younger.
- Eat very slowly. I used to rush through eating. My stomach did not register full because I was eating fast so I ended up over eating. Now I smell and look at the food and think of how many people were involved in getting this food to me. Farmers, truck drivers, warehouse personnel, store clerks. It is amazing how many people help me get food. Then I start taking small bites of food and chew it carefully. After I swallow I might sip water and feel my stomach receiving the food.
- I used a method to cut back on smoking that involved being mindful of smoking even before I knew what mindfulness was. I did not go cold turkey. I stopped judging smoking and just started out by cutting in half how many I smoked. When I smoked, I did not do other activities. I sat down and lit the cigarette and smelled the smoke. As I inhaled I tried to be aware of the smoke filling my lungs. By this method I went from a pack a day to 1/2 a pack. I started eliminating smoking and only smoked at assigned times. By doing this I got down to 6 cigarettes a day within a couple weeks. My body started to crave tobacco less. After a month I was down to 3 a day. I stayed at that point for some months. At some point I just stopped because I had found other ways of entertaining myself.
- There are herbal products you can smoke but any time you burn products and inhale it there are some things that go in the lungs.
- Drink a strong cup of peppermint tea. It has a calming effect.
- Come to mindfulness discussions in Group Support Chat Mondays at 3:30 PM EST and 5 pm EST on Thursday.
Hope you find a way to cut back and let the body purify itself and reduce the craving. That may be a better short term goal than trying to quit all at once.
