How do you know if you’re talking to the right therapist for you?
Hello, I’m considering going to therapy as I have been dealing with so much. I’m not just talking about depression and anxiety as I have developed unusual habits as well that interferes with how I go with my everyday life. I know something’s wrong with me and I need serious help. I’m just scared of the fact that my first therapist might just won’t be a great match for me.
@Hiroaji I understand your concerns and your concerns are valid. Not every therapist will be the right match for you. Oftentimes you can tell by your feelings and intuition. One that is right for you will vibe in good ways with you. Things to watch out for is when a therapist starts sending mixed messages or mixed signals. One that doesn't understand you or that makes you feel comfortable. One that is very judgmental of you. One that doesn't answer your questions or provide adequate feedback or discussion. It takes time to find one that vibes sometimes. It's best to interview them to see if they are right for you. If not, move on to someone else. I know this is scary for you. I have faith and confidence in you that you will work this out. Thanks for posting.
Thank you as well for the warm welcome Peace :)
@Hiroaji You're welcome
@Hiroaji I think you are right to be concerned about finding the right therapist. Many people have to try several therapists before they find one who is right for them.
If you need serious help, not just for simple depression and anxiety, then maybe you need to find a very experienced therapist, and avoid beginners. Maybe you also need to find a therapist who has a strong focus on one kind of therapy, and avoid therapists who have spent a lot of time collecting degrees and other qualifications in many different things.
Sometimes, if you ask around, you can get a personal recommendation from someone who has had successful therapy. Sometimes your doctor can recommend a therapist who gets good results.
Perhaps you might find that a therapist who charges high fees and who has a long waiting list is more likely to be able to help you than a therapist who charges very little and does not have many clients.
Therapists I know (in real life, not here at 7 Cups) tell me that you will know whether a therapist is right for you after just one session. If you don't have a strong feeling that you've found the right therapist after the first session, it might be wise to move on quickly and not waste more time with that therapist.
When a therapist is right for you, they will quickly understand exactly what's wrong with you and be able to come up with a plan to make things better. I hope you'll quickly be able to find a therapist who can do that, even if you have to try more then one.
Charlie
Thanks Charlie, I’ll take note of everything that you’ve said :)
@Hiroaji
@RarelyCharlie
thank you for this!!
@Hiroaji I hear you. It is really helpful to have a therapist you can trust.
Here is a description by Lisa, a counselor and the clinical director of the 7cups online therapy program:
"the 7 Cups Online Therapy Sub-Community is a warm, encouraging, and safe space to be where you are free from judgment and we encourage you to share! We want to be able to encourage therapist involvement, answer questions to provide emotional support and develop healthy coping skills and learn more about mental health and 7 Cups Online Therapy. The vision is that this is going to be a safe and open space for all. We want it to be a kind and welcoming space where members, listeners and therapists can get involved. We have no expectations of members, listeners and therapists but to follow the 7 Cups Community Guidelines and to support one another. Want more personalized guidance? Check out my profile."
@Hiroaji
They wont be, neither the second through 10th. Finding the right therapist is like finding a soul mate, a little, you'll just know when its right. there will be an easy flow of energy between the two of you, intimacy is a lot more than sexual. someone you can be open and unafraid with is most important now, I think.
Good Luck
