What do you think about posting on forums, such as Reddit/etc?

Hello all!

Does anyone post on other forums (like Reddit) for recreational purposes, learning, or giving feedback on fun topics? What has your experience been? I am certainly not talking about giving therapeutic advice online to people. Forums to me have been a way to meet people similar to me and to share ideas. For instance, I am a big fan of the mbti communities.

I have had had mixed feelings. In a way, it's nice to stimulating conversations. But, I do get disappointed at some of the uninformed opinions out there, especially when I read people's posts on sexual assault, trauma and relationships. Trolls exist, but i feel sad seeing someone acting rude to someone vulnerable online. I have mentioned to some online posters on other forums that I am a therapist. It was funny when an angry man online accused me of lying. Their definition of a real therapist fits the stereotype that you see on TV.

We all know that therapists are human, and may not always act like what people expect us to act like when posting online. At this point, I am choosing not to post on other non-therapeutic communities.

any thoughts or feelings that you want to share?

I use forums a lot simply to ease the loneliness. But then my opinions are always unpopular so I become the enemy, which means I have to flee those sites. The 7cups forums are pretty chill though, just a lot of things go unanswered.

@Phthalo

yes, you read my mind. My opinions sometimes become unpopular.

It's true that forums ease loneliness. We work all day in isolated offices, and may feel too tired to go out. Forums are a free and easy way to interact without spending too much energy.

7 cups of tea does seem more respectful. :)

I second all of the above replies, as I love posting in forums. If you're looking for some "experience" to help become a therapist, replying to posts that are posted in the mental illness sub-Reddit's, such as r/mentalhealth, and even some more specific one's such as r/anxiety or r/depression can be helpful. You're correct regarding that is important to refrain from giving advice, as that's as well a rule on many mental health-oriented sub-Reddit's.

Hi!

I'm actually kind of new to forums but the ones I've looked at are 7 Cups, Reddit and BeyondBlue (which is an Australian organisation) I'm a part of.

I've found that it can be a bit tricky as you don't really know who is going to respond and it's a bit daunting waiting for a reply. Reddit seems to have good moderators and in BeyondBlue every post is checked before it's uploaded which means there's absolutely no abuse or trolling whatsoever.
