Hello everyone! It's wonderful to see you all again. Happy Monday, I hope you're having a relaxing start to your week. Today I wanted to talk about the acronym REST. REST stands for relax, evaluate, set an intention and take action. Let's go over what this means and how we can use it during stressful situations! Our first response during stressful situations may be an unhealthy coping mechanism, so this strategy is designed to help evaluate the situation and see how you could go about solving it in a more healthy way.

Relax - Freeze, stop what you're doing and take some deep breaths. Walk away from the situation if needed.
Evaluate - Ask yourself what is happening in the situation that has made you feel upset. What are the facts? How are you feeling physically and mentally?
Set an intention - Make a goal or plan for your next step. Perhaps talking to a trusted friend, going outside for a walk or anything that will help deescalate the situation. Think of something you can do right now, in the moment, to help calm down.
Take action - Now it is time to put your plan into motion. It may not solve your problem, but it will help set up a path to a healthier and more effective way to cope.

chibird — There are different types of rest! Make sure you...

Check in questions for today:
1. How are you doing?
2. When you are in a stressful situation, what is typically your first response?
3. What is your go-to activity when you need to de-stress?
4. Are you an early bird or a night owl?

Thanks for checking in! See you next week!

Hi. I like this acronym and idea. I used to get stuck a lot on the first Relax part. I do that a little better now and can Evaluate calmly, but it's a toss up what happens after that. Sometimes after evaluating I'll shove something back down or try to feel "stronger". Sometimes I'll try to talk about it. I had to think a lot about your question on what is my first response. I think first I try to see what my options are, what I can change or do differently. That typically means what I can do myself without having to rely on or affect others. But the only things that really stress me are people issues, so I end up usually trying to talk to the other person. Depending on the person and if it goes well, either I come up with new ideas to try, or I end up isolating from them. It takes me a while to get to the isolate part. I'm pretty patient and adamant about trying whatever I can think of to find middle ground. It doesn't seem to work often though. For things not related to people, however, I've been able to find various solutions that have led to good things happening. This subject reminded me that sometimes it's ok too to not have everything figured out, that there are times when I don't know what the best option is until I just try something and see what happens. Kind of like a partial solution that I can complete later. Thankyou. (:

@fairyava How am I doing? Very up and down emotionally and the confusion and brain fog are making functioning difficult. Stressful situation... a sense of panic is probably my first response but then I've learnt to look calm on the surface generally even when I'm sinking inside. To de-stress I will find routine jobs that I can do to take my mind off things. Or chat with a friend online. I've always been a night owl but more so lately when my mind is so active and I can't seem to shut it off to sleep. Thanks for taking the time to help others x

Hey Blue that must be frustrating to feel up & down emotionally, I hope it's getting better very soon. Wow, thats a great lesson you have learned; trying to stay calm in stressful situations isn't always easy. I'm impressed with your de-stressing methods I also find chatting with friends may help us relax. A night owl 🦉 is great! Green. 💚

1) i've been struggling lately, but i realized the importance of my recovery and staying on top of it and making sure i'm gentle and caring with myself. so, having a hard time, but hanging in there and staying hopeful 2) when i'm in a stressful situation, my first response is to feel anxiety pick up in my chest and my stomach. though, i've always done well at keeping my cool in hard situations, so i'm able to get through them 3) when i need to de-stress, i go to meditation or distracting media that makes me happy. i also turn to art and journaling though i've been needing to be more on top with those lately 4) i'm definitely a night owl and i always have been. i don't mind waking up early though if i got enough sleep before, i like the morning time a lot too as well as the late night thank you for the check in! ❤️
