Trauma Support Community Check-in: Monday 26 and Tuesday 27, October 2020

User Profile: WelcomeToChat
WelcomeToChat October 26th, 2020

Hello, wonderful people !

I wish you these days go smoothly, and you have a peaceful time the week ahead.

The idea I came up with for this check-in is:

Collect little Good Moments !

There are things that can make us feel good for a lovely little moment.

It might be just for an instant.

Moments we can collect, like small crystal beads in a little box.

It can be eating some chocolate, hearing a song we love, wearing an old sweater, watching flowers, the sun on our face…

The questions I propose you are:

1. What are a few things that can give you such a moment of "feeling good" ?

2. What were some small good moments in your weekend ?

3. How do you feel at this moment ?

I look forward to your answers.

And wish you all the best !

Marcelo.

Big Thanks Skye ! You are great !
And thank you for your compliments !

I have seen your energizing presence all over the place.

You fine-tune your interventions to the exact circumstance as needed.

At times you bring your teen youth, fun, and informality to contribute enthusiasm and vitality to the place you are writing, and this Community at large.

When needed, you speak tactfully, empathically, and wisely, giving compassion, love, and thoughtful reflection of the situation.

I admire you for that.

Back to today's topic, you know how to make happy moments out of family and true friendship.

You know how to make those small good moments I talk about.

Regarding sleep, it's so disappointing when you slept enough hours, nonstop, but get up tired, and not even wanting to get back to bed. It happens to me, it's frustrating and perplexing. I haven't figured it out yet.

Thank you again, Skye, for your kindness and for answering these prompts with your characteristic true, honest voice, generously sharing your life experiences with all of us.

Always grateful,

Marcelo.

Hi !

It surprised me how much we have in common. The same happened to me (in this same check-in) with Jess (NoneTheWiser). Maybe a lot of us have many things in common...

I read in your profile that you like to sing. I do too. I sang in choirs for many years (Bach, mostly). And I also love to sing jazz standards and bossa nova. There is a sense of community in a choir, resembles 7 Cups to me.

I saw you were a Nurse, a most altruistic profession. I have a niece who is also a nurse. I admire her a lot. She was living exhausted these months (works at IC room) until she got Covid. She is “well” now (feels horrible, but out of danger).

My sister also works with adults with very special needs. I admire her, as I admire you.

I also did “reinforcement” schooling for poor kids, and volunteered at the management of a large scale project to improve education for poor children in my country. I value greatly any contribution to education, particularly to those that need more support.

In fact, I value greatly everything I know about you. We have much in common, which helps me estimate so highly your qualities.

Regarding “Chocolate”… What could be better ? It’s like a little package of pleasure to indulge ourselves from time to time. A well-deserved prize for your weekday service and your Sunday devotion to kids that need your help.

Having time alone, and enjoying it, is such a valuable thing ! But few people can do it these days.

You avoid a very prevalent and damaging confusion between solitude and loneliness.

Being alone is not the same as being lonely. Having calm and peace, enjoying the company of ourselves, is a most healthful practice.

It is also required for high-quality activities, like quietly reflecting, or reading a book.

I wish that your wise, compassionate, and balanced approach to life, combining service to others, little pleasures, and moments of solitude, help you to ease those bits of insecurity, and also help with one of life’s greatest challenges. The resolve to forgive.

I thank you very much for your contribution to this check-in, and wish you the best,

Marcelo.

Hi !

I am glad you feel wellish...

Cats are always a source of tenderness and fun. They are forever willing to be caressed, their fur is so smooth and gentle to our hands, their bodies so warm.

You are lucky to have a playful cat. It’s so much fun, how clever and agile they are, with quick reflexes and skillful hands. They are FAST ! It only takes a crumpled paper ball, or a piece of yarn to play for hours. They love cardboard toilet paper rolls too, cardboard boxes to hide… the list is endless.

What is your cat’s favorite play or toy ?

And reading is wonderful. To become immersed in another world, travel in fantasy, learn something new…

It’s key to find “that book” that captures your attention. Then, it’s all effortless. Like slowly, gently sliding into it.

Technology and the distractions it brings is often pointed to as “The” enemy of reading. But it can be such an ally. Now you can read from your phone, buying from Google Books or Kindle. Get recommendations from Goodreads and Amazon. Used-book online bookstores make it very cheap and easy to buy “real” paper-made books.

And we are lucky to live in this age. In the 1800s only about 10% of people worldwide could read (only 56% in 1950 !)

What’s your favorite genre ? What are you reading now ? Do you have any book recommendations for us ? How do you prefer to read: paper, e-reader, tablet, phone ? How do you choose your books ? (oh, sorry for so many questions…)

Meeting friends is a luxury in these times of “social-distancing” (such a horrible concept has become positive). Good that you could do it.

Continuing with the long Gardening conversation up in this page, and the “happy moments” theme of this check-in, I quote Marcel Proust:

Let us be grateful to the people who make us happy; they are the charming gardeners who make our souls blossom.”

Thank you for your lovely contribution to this check-in.

I look forward to your comments.

Kind regards,

Marcelo.

Oh, cats are sooo adorable. They are different from dogs, more precise in their hunting and playing, but also crazier. My cat is too smart for some toys such as the infamous (In her eyes) laser pointer and isn't very interested in the normal fishing pole style toys. She loves playing with my kumihimo or knitting, which is strange as she only likes playing with the yarn I worked hard on like... smh... but I love her anyway.

How I so agree. To me, reading is like an escape. An escape from reality, from everything wrong here. The worlds I escape to are endless beautiful places, full of mystery and happiness. Always a happy ending, for someone at least. I wish the real world was like that. But alas things will never be as such.

I do love reading dystopian future books, as it's normally every genre into one! It's realistic, has romantic twists, in most books sci-fi, sometimes historical fiction, and mystery. Right now I'm reading The Red Queen, The Thunderhead, the final Trials Of Apollo, and Forge. I majorly recommend the series The Selection, and Hunger Games. Also the first two books of Divergent. I normally read a paper book, as there's something so special about physically turning the page, but I don't mind E-books. And I lot's of the time I'll search dystopian up in the Library catalog and find those books, or go to the library and read the backs and look at the covers of books to read.

Thank you so much, this comment brightened my day. It's sad to be in a place where comments such as these do that, where happiness is so hard to find... but it's still something never to take for granted, happiness is. I've seen it taken for granted before, I never want to end up like them. So I'm grateful for everything that puts a smile on my face, a laugh in my voice.

Sincerely

Emmy (Core/Host of the VetoedSystem)

@The0Vetoed0System

Hi Emmy !

Sure cats have their ways. Very capricious at times. Like your cat likes to meddle with your work. She might notice that you value it a lot. That is “the thing” that’s going on. She is curious, wants to participate, and not to be excluded in the “big event” of the day.

A sign of intelligence, and subtle, complex wishes, no doubt.

I feel that reading is moving to other realm of Reality, not necessarily to “escape”

Those beautiful worlds, full of mystery and happiness, are real in their own terms.

Reality has many levels. We are miriads of waves vibrating in empty spece. Vast and complex systems of atoms and molecules. Trillions of cells cooperating. A human body. Intelligence, conciousness. And conciousness of something, that might be these beautiful, misterious worlds. When in our conciousness, they are real in some sense.

You are a reading athlete ! Alternating among all those huge novels at the same time ! I couldn’t do it anymore.

I agree that Dystopias need some element of realism, and some historical, futuristic or scientific plausibility to be credible and thus engaging, and mystery and romance to thrill us.

As Dystopias go, I often feel living in one. Maybe reflecting the tragedies and injustices of our world in literary form, confined to the space of the book, makes us tune to that, as we can process this controlled tragic worlds as we can’t the other.

I know Divergent and of course The Hunger Games series. Great engaging and satisfying literature.

I have heard of Scythe, I understand it belongs to the “Big Brother” tradition that comes from “1984” to “The Matrix”. Also about “The Selection” series, that resemble Medieval literature and folklore, with its drastic class divisions and noble family politics . I understand that The Red Queen has some familiarity with this.

If you think of all of these and the massive success of other cultural phenomenons, like Star Wars, for example, the combination of futuristic worlds with Middle Ages elements, both real and symbolic, has an enormous appeal.

A great theme for a essay on current literature... (please give me some credit if you write it).

I agree that there is something about the sensation of touching paper, holding the book as an object, and also how easy it is on the eyes without any glass in the middle, that makes reading real paper books incomparable

That I brightened your day, even a little, and put a smile on your face I such a gift for me !

You made my day and my night !

I believe that you will find many happy moments in this lovely Community, so please keep participating with your valuable contributions like this one.

I look forward to it.

And wish you all the best,

Marcelo.
