Traumatic Experiences Community Check-In 12-13 Wednesday-Thursday August 2020

Good morning everyone! In todays check-in I will be discussing one of the most common adult symptoms of childhood trauma which is Isolation. This is something that does not only affect those who have experienced trauma. Many individuals feel isolated. People who have experienced severe trauma in their lives are at a higher risk of experiencing isolation. In part the urge to isolate is somewhat learned and used as a protective measure when an individual is feeling traumatized. Maybe we become masters at cutting off the connection from whom we deem to be dangerous people; even doing so with a smile on our face interacting just enough with the outside world to make it appear as if we are alright.

This tendency to isolate could also be neurological, or a change in the way our brains developed during our early stages of growth because we did not get the attention and connection which children need to grow neurons that support connection with other individuals. If that is the cause this will be something that those individuals will have to work harder to overcome than people who have the innate ability to connect with others. For many who experience childhood trauma it is a sort of developmental delay.

For starters Isolation is much different that solitude. Solitude on one hand is a choice one makes to be by themselves in order to focus and collect themselves before returning to their normal level of connection with other people. Many of us who have endured past trauma often have a difficult time choosing solitude when we need it. Isolation on the other hand is much different. Isolation is a state of living with very little connection to other people often without meaningful relationships. If isolation gets so bad that it blocks us from being happy or functional perhaps a shift is in order. Accomplishing this can be very difficult because once life becomes stressful, which often happens, PTSD symptoms can make us want to isolate even further.

Loneliness itself is a huge factor when it comes to the development of Complex PTSD. It is also a factor which causes the symptoms of PTSD to last for a much longer duration than they otherwise would. The best chances to overcome the harmful effects of CPTSD and childhood PTSD such as depression or the increased risk of serious health problems, is to strengthen the ability to safely make a connection with other people. Loneliness is not just painful emotionally. It becomes poison to our bodies. It cuts us off from many healing opportunities almost like restricting ourselves, giving us little space for movement.

It is not uncommon for individuals who have been severely abused to feel resigned to loneliness, especially as they get older. Learning to connect with others however, is definitely worth the struggle. The best way to overcome isolation is to take change in small doses, trying something new and seeing how much we can tolerate it. Then we try a little more while checking again to see how well our tolerance for this change is. We dont have to go out and change everything all at once. Baby steps are usually the best long term strategy.

A common misconception is that by doing things all alone being independent makes us strong. In reality living without the love and care of others does not lead to strength. A couple things to keep in mind about isolation is that it is normal for survivors of trauma to feel this way. It is very common especially in those who experience trauma very early in life. We do have the capacity to walk forwards out of isolation, one step at a time, no matter how reclusive we may have become.

So before I end this check-in I will ask you all three optional questions.

1. How are you feeling today?

2. Do you currently isolate yourself from others?

3. If yes to the second question, what steps would you consider taking or have you taken to overcome this sense of isolation? If no, what helped you to not become isolated after experiencing trauma?

As always my friends I hope you have a greater today than yesterday in hopes of a better and brighter tomorrow!!!

@Fireskye13

I'm sorry to hear you are feeling overwhelmed. I too have suffered from isolation and in many ways I still do. What I do to fight back against the tendency to isolate is go out and explore new areas that I haven't seen or experienced before. Not necessarily with the goal of meeting new people, but just to feel a little less confined. These excursions have led to me making new friends but that is never my goal when I set out on these ventures. Thats just a step that I have taken to be a little less isolated. Its good that you have seven or eight people in your life. That shows that you haven't completely isolated yourself. I do hope you have a wonderful day today and that things aren't as emotional as they have been for you. Thank yo uso much for participating in this check-in my friend.

@Cinna84

I'm glad to hear you are feeling pretty good today. Covid has definitely pushed many of us into isolation. There are still alternative means of making the human connection including online communication and even using services to have video communication with friends and family who may be isolating during this time as well. It is definitely difficult to maintain social interactions during this time. I'm also very glad you have joined the 7 cups community. I have established wonderful connections with many incredible people on this platform and I sincerely hope the same happens for you. I want to thank you so much for participating in this check-in today and I hope you have a wonderful rest of your day my friend.

1. How are you feeling today?

I am feeling tired because I havent been sleeping enough hours. I also feel distracted...had a hard time accomplishing work today. Also feeling conflicted about certain decisions I need to make over the next few months.

2. Do you currently isolate yourself from others?

I do, but I don't think it is usually intentional. I just have a hard time connecting with people beyond a superficial level and I don't really understand why. It makes me feel like something is really wrong with me and I must be scary or a freak or something that I can't seem to make friends. So I feel lonely a lot which adds to my depression which makes me isolate more because I don't want to burden people...and so the cycle continues.

3. If yes to the second question, what steps would you consider taking or have you taken to overcome this sense of isolation? If no, what helped you to not become isolated after experiencing trauma?

I am not sure I am doing anything at this time. I am also really shy so it is another thing I have to push through. I think trauma is one piece of the story, but I also think that depression has made me isolate a lot. I am always so afraid of just being a burden on people. The trauma has just made me much more quiet because I am too scared of the consequences of speaking up for myself or expressing my emotions. I do think therapy has helped me a bit in this respect though.

I'm sorry to hear that you are not getting enough sleep my friend. I don't know what decisions you have to make over the next few months but I do hope you feel less conflicted going forward. It is unfortunate that you feel something is really wrong with yourself. I am sure you are not a "freak" as you stated. Loneliness often causes us to feel depressed and I do hope things change for the better in regards to your depression. I am really glad that therapy has helped you even if it has only been a little helpful. Thank you for participating in this check-in and again I do hope everything gets better for you moving forward.

@sincere5772

I am sorry to hear you feel depressed and that this has been ongoing for so long. I do hope things get better for you and in time you overcome this depression. It is easy for us to just accept depression as an absolute, but this is not a healthy habit to develop my friend. Again I do hope things get better for you. Thank you for participating in this check-in.

@Understandingempath Hey Hi. I realize that I am almost a week late for this check in, so I do not expect or even require a reply.

Isolation is a big issue here. Where we live, neighbors aren't in close proximinty. Most people in the area prefer to be left alone and don't exactly go out visiting. We were taught to keep to ourselves and fed more then a few lies about being unsafe for others or that people will only misunderstand. That this misunderstanding will only cause problems and leave us unsafe. Family started it from birth I believe. Anxiety and depression tend to add to this.

There were steps taken, joining here to socialize and then going to therapy appointments and out grocery shopping. Then this virus happened and cancelled going to therapy physically. Now sessions are done on the phone or through email. Shopping is now anxiety inducing because of having to wear a mask. The 6 ft social distancing adds to the feeling of people being unsafe. Touch has always been an issue which is now being reinforced by the current rules. As for here, there have been many bad experiences that have only added to the isolation urges. Trolls and bullies, make this much worse. So we've grown fearful of talking and sharing with people. Fearful of comparisons and judgements. We're trying to change this with boundaries and and limiting the amount of energy we give those people.
