Traumatic Experiences Community Check-In 13 July 2020

Good morning everyone! The topic for todays check-in is shame. The thought with shame is that Its my fault or that one is not simply stuck in a terrible situation in which they are powerless; instead thinking there is something wrong with themselves, not those around them. Large repeated doses of shame resulting in zero repair or reconnection can be considered toxic. Small doses of shame can be helpful in certain ways. Such as forcing one to stop action and reconsider, maybe even becoming somewhat more aware of how their behavior is affecting others around them.

Working with shame must be done slowly and carefully. We must work first to harness all of our resources: spiritual beliefs, sense of humor, personal heroes, places where we feel comfortable. It is important to understand how important the resourcing is so we don't get discouraged that the process is so slow. It's important to distinguish between shame and guilt because they influence our behavior in different ways. Guilt can motivate you to make amends, apologize, or correct a behavior. Doing such things will help alleviate guilt and may increase the extent to which we feel positive about ourselves. In this way, guilt can be a helpful emotion.

Shame, on the other hand, is rarely useful. With shame, one may be more likely to engage in self-punishment (such as through deliberate self-harm) or isolate themselves from others. This is going to do little to alleviate the shame in the long-term and can even intensify one's shame. So how do we overcome shame and find freedom?

Explore your use of language: Know the difference between saying I am bad and I feel bad. The first statement reflects identification with a painful emotion, whereas the second statement allows for recognition of a feeling without being consumed by it.

Avoid shoulds: Shoulds are one way of pushing perfectionism or perceived expectations on oneself and rejecting the individuals authentic presence. One might say, I should be over this by now, I shouldnt make mistakes, or I should be strong. When they say or think the word should, it is truly best to step back and instead focus on self-acceptance.

Imagine shame is a bully: Seeing shame as a bully can give us some space from the emotions and allow us to talk back. How do we feel when the shame puts us down? What do we want shame to know?

Experience the bodys sensations of shame: Often the most difficult part of healing shame is tolerating the related felt sense in our body. Words can hardly describe the intolerable disgust that often accompanies shame. We might experience an encompassing sinking feeling or a vague sensation as though we did something wrong. However, over time as we increase our capacity to feel our bodies, we can develop greater choices about how to move and breathe. There is tremendous power in reclaiming our bodies from shame. Perhaps we find a posture that feels strong and capable, or maybe we place our hands over our heart in a gesture of loving kindness.

Both shame and trauma interfere with a person's natural ability to remain present. Full orientation involves being aware of inner body sensations and emotions as well as being open to the signals we receive from the environment through our five senses. Shame can interfere with all of these. It is easy to dissociate or go into a fog. One can actually get lost in the past, forgetting where they actually are. Also, the details of shaming or traumatic events may be hazy and fuzzy as one may have only implicit or emotional memory with no sense of the details of what happened. Shame is so often overlooked as a symptom of PTSD despite evidence suggesting the two go hand in hand.

I will keep this check-in fairly short and ask of you these three questions:

1. How are you feeling today?

2. Have you ever felt shame and if so how did you overcome it?

3. What is one self care activity you have planned for today?

As always I hope you all have a greater today than yesterday, in hopes of a better and brighter tomorrow!!!!!

Hey! That's one of my favorite topics in my healing process!

1. How are you feeling today?

I'm a tiny bit restless for some reason. I had an emotional weekend, with much healing work and evolution - now I feel kind of weird, maybe I'm getting used to some kind of "new normal".

2. Have you ever felt shame and if so how did you overcome it?

Shame is probably my most felt emotion for a very very long time. I remember when I started therapy, my therapist said "make a list of things you're ashamed of, we'll start from there" and the list was a full A4 page long and it wasn't even 1%... it makes me laugh now, at the time it was the discovery of my life - I didn't even know about shame. I've mostly worked through that list and catch myself when I feel shame again now and then for whatever reason. At the time, my shame was based on wrong representations from my parents, so I used to yell "at them" (they were not present) saying how wrong the way they put all that in my head is, up until I'd usually start crying and I'd re-establish the truth about myself - that I am worthy, whether or not I am smart, that I am amazing and great and important and loved. All these things were covered with shame (feeling unworthy, stupid, lame, unimportant and hated...). Nowadays I have to work through the shame I felt when I was sexually abused - each time with a new memory. I usually work through it by explaining what's what and using a lot of self-compassion and remembering who I was at the time. My favorite sentence being "I didn't like that it happened this way, but it doesn't mean anything about me".

3. What is one self care activity you have planned for today?

I didn't have any planned but that is a good question. I'm going to plan one. Maybe I'll do some meditation :)

@HenrietteK

Restless is not always a bad thing I suppose. I hope your weekend was emotional in a positive way. It's awesome that you already combat shame when it presents itself. I'm sorry to hear you had to suffer such abuse. Self care is always number one. Meditation is a wonderful choice for self care activities. I do hope you have a wonderful day today.

@Understandingempath****** Trigger Warning******* Hi I am feeling fine today. I struggled with shame for many years due to reliving sexual abuse through flashbacks, nightmares, and body memories/sensations. Each time I relived these things I felt excruciating shame. I am doing much better now after finding a good therapist who helped me with EMDR therapy and Exposure therapy..I also say affirmations after flashbacks,nightmares and sensations now. This is helpful for me also. .I consider coming to 7cups as part of self care. I will also do some breathing exercises and listen to some podcasts.Thanks!

Positive affirmations work for me as well. I am glad you are feeling fine today. It's never easy recovering from past abuse. It is a good thing that therapy has worked for you in this regard. I am glad you have found ways to cope through breathing exercises and 7 cups. Podcasts can be fun. I do hope you have a wonderful day!

1. How are you feeling today?

I woke up feeling a little bit off today. Not in the good way. Nearly called out of work because I basically just didn't want to function today but I'm here. One step at a time today, I feel a bit fragile.

2. Have you ever felt shame and if so how did you overcome it?

I felt like I've been shamed before, and not sure I overcame it.

3. What is one self care activity you have planned for today?

Take a very long shower when I get home and play some Xbox.

@Understandingempath I hope it does too, it's draining and it's showing in the words I'm using. I only know because my managers told me my words are out of order when I talk out loud (ex. "Your envelope is in the receipt"). It's frustrating and I'm trying to be patient with myself

@Understandingempath

Hi. I just joined this community and I'm glad I did. Shame is something my therapist and I have been talking about a lot lately, so this was very timely!

1. I could be a lot better, but I also could be a lot worse. So, I guess I'm so-so today.

2. I have dealt with a LOT of shame and am honestly still trying to feel my way through it. So I'm really thankful to have come accross this post.

3. I didn't have anything in particular in mind, but maybe I'll spend some time reading (other than my homework reading) or play some guitar.

Im glad you joined this community as well. I do hope your day ends better than so-so but at least it hasn't been terrible. You do hope you are able to overcome that shame as well. That's awesome that you play guitar. What genre music do you enjoy playing the most?

i wish I could say it has ended well but nope 😕 I have back issues which caused a fall (Im okay, just in a bit more pain) and I almost passed out at another point for other reasons. I mostly play Christian/worship music. My faith is a huge part of my life and so pretty much everything I do is, in some way, traced back to it, including my music that I listen to, play, and write.

@Rebekahwriter13

Ah I love tea. I'm glad to hear you have some good friends that help you through the negative thoughts. It's not always easy to counteract the negative with positive talk and it is wonderful that you have been able to do that. Sorry to hear about the gout though, thats just awful. I hope today is more positive for you and that the writers block goes away. Thank you for participating in this check in.
