Traumatic Experiences Community Check-In: Saturday-Sunday, 19-20 September 2020
Hey community!
As always, this is a supportive space, and its optional to participate in check-ins.
This weekends topic is covering Types of Self-Care.
I know Self-Care is one thats commonly talked about. I like to think its because its so important for us all to take part in.
In some way or another we all do self-care. Even with us each being unique, and at different parts of our journeys.
Typically we can break down Self-Care into two main parts or types. Physical and Emotional.
Physical:
These are only a few common examples
● Our sleep. If we feel well rested and if our sleep schedule is decent.
● Our food. If we eat regularly and if its healthy for us.
● Our exercise. If we enjoy or feel more energized.
Emotional:
These are only a few common examples
● Our thoughts. How we are doing internally. If we have a good outlet to share.
● Our relationships. Who were safe and supported with. People we trust and care about, and vice versa.
● Our time. Maybe theres activities we like to do. Maybe theres a safe space we enjoy. Maybe we have a solid daily schedule we keep.
Please remember you are not alone in this journey, we are here to support one another.
Just going to leave a couple general questions.
Check-In Questions:
How are you doing this weekend?
What are some positive types of self-care you practice?
Do you have anything youre looking forward to next week?
Feel free to check in again if needed over the weekend. I'm here for all of you.
I do have work and school at nights these next few days. I'll be reading and responding when I can.

@AstronomySkies Thank you for the check-in!
1. This entire week has been hard for me. It has been a constant switch between having flashbacks and trying to ground myself and then having flashbacks again.
2. I am doing self care by staying at home where I feel the most safest. I am also doing some reading that I like.
@AstronomySkies
@NoneTheWiser suggested participating in these daily check-ins. I figure I'll give it a shot. Hoping it becomes or is a little more active other days.
1. I'm actually feeling quite accomplished this weekend. We work with ESL students, and, with the support of a friend, finished a gamification structure for our NEPs to promote their growth. Tomorrow, I think I'll try to clean our room (something I enjoy but have had to postpone for work). I also want to go purchase the laminator I saw so we can use monopoly money for the gamification (thanks COVID >.>).
2. I have a complex relationship with self-care. As a caregiver protector, it's my responsbility to take care of everything. I ensure we are drinking enough water, eating often enough, sleeping as needed, etc. The previous host found self-care extremely triggering and traumatizing, and I'm not partial to things that hurt them. I don't make a big effort to follow self-care guidelines like the previous host before they fell apart, and I'm not fond of their interests either which were like double-edged swords to them. I struggle with self-care amongst fulfilling my own role, but I'm learning. I wish I knew what to do in my leisure time other than hang out on forums.
3. I don't think there's anything I'm looking forward to this coming week. You would think I would be excited to apply the gamification, but I think a different fragment/alter has that. Whenever support groups ask me what I am grateful for or what I am looking forward to, I honestly have no answer. I don't really have attachments outside of caring for my system. I worry I won't be able to make close friends or find my own interests.
How are you doing this weekend?
It's kind of mixed - I really wasn't doing well, but I've started eatting again today.
What are some positive types of self-care you practice?
Writing to regulate my emotions, talking with supportive friends weekly, eatting healthy food (okay I didn't do that last one much this week, but I'm choosing to do it again)
Do you have anything youre looking forward to next week?
Sort of - starting college on Monday! I feel excited and very nervous because it's been a long time since I last had any formal schooling.
Thanks for the check in @AstronomySkies! hope all is well with you
