Traumatic Experiences Check-In 11 May 2020

Good day to everyone on 7 cups and especially to all of you in the Forum.

This is my first check-in for the forum. As such I decided to focus on one of the key things to remember when trying to overcome past or current trauma. The focus for today is: DRUMROLL!!! Coping skills and knowing the differences between Problem focused coping and Emotion focused coping. To do this I will discuss examples of each type. For instance; an example of Problem focused coping would be to focus on work performance developing a clear plan that would help oneself to better improve and begin to feel more confident about ones ability to succeed. An example of Emotion focused coping would be to read a book to distract oneself from negative predictions such as being fired and becoming homeless from poor work performance. Each form of coping has its benefits and below I will list a variety of both forms. The list does not cover all of them as ultimately an individual has the capacity to create coping skills which work best for them.

Emotion Focused Coping Skills Problem Focused Coping Skills

Exercise Managing Time Managing

Drawing/Painting Establish Healthy Boundaries

Listen to Music Ask for Support from Friend/Professional

Take a Relaxing Bath Engage in Problem Solving

Gardening Create a To-Do List

Meditation Walk Away

These are just several of the countless positive coping skills an individual may use to lessen their daily struggles. I personally use Aroma Therapy and Meditation when it comes to Emotion Focused Coping. I always go to Problem Solving and Self Reflection when it comes to Problem Focused Coping. What I will ask each of you is to simply list one of each type that you have used or would consider using to ease the troubles experienced from traumatic experiences in your lives. They do not have to be skills on this list. I would also like to thank you all for giving me your time on this beautiful day and I hope you all are feeling well today!!!

Hello,

for me walking away seems like the best solution at the moment but the person I am having a problem with doesn't want distance
