Traumatic Experiences Community Daily Check In - Saturday 20th May 2017

An earlier check in thread today, in the hope of catching people in all time zones this Saturday. It's always an odd thought to me - as one person's day ends, anothers is just beginning. It's 6am here in the UK, but somewhere out there it's 6pm, and most of the day is over. Do you wish you could fast forward your day like that? Or would you rather restart it again? Or just take it as it comes?

This is your space to share whatever's on your mind - though do respect other members if your contribution may trigger.

Hi,

Greetings,

I'm so grateful about this support group. I live in Mexico, but my primary language is English, I wouldn't even know how to find a support group here.

A few months ago I've had a resurgence of PTSD symptoms after having an amazing six years in relative calm and happiness. I believe this time it is because I'm in the safest space (emotionally and physically) I've ever been. Then I was startled and it brought everything up again. Additionally, I'm connecting with an estranged sister with a shared traumatic past and my service dog has an inoperable tumor in his lower intestines that requires benign neglect- I can't do anything about it. I'm hypervigilent again, my startle reflex is up in arms, anxiety, panic, flashbacks, nightmares and dissociation... It feels so unfair that I have to deal with all of this stuff again on top of situations that happen that are beyond my control.

During the last month I've been on a vacation. It has been amazing and I'm excited to finally get home tomorrow so that I can curl up with my dog in my own bed. While away, some other stressful family things came up: One of my sisters is being scheduled for a bone marrow test to rule out Leukemia. My niece of the other sister was taken to the ER for cutting and suicidal ideation. It appears that one of my family members who was on vaction with she fell so many times during the trip and appears to be suffering Alzheimers. She's 71 years old and really having a hard time- It's so hard to see her so confused, bruised and volatile. Her wife and I were trying to find ways to be able to manage things and support one another. Both of us see the change in her personality and functionioning and it's terrifying.

I will be beginning a trauma workbook in the next week or so with my therapist that we had decided on before the vacation. I'm most likely going to need other support while working through things. This Trauma/PTSD community was just getting started before I left and I wanted to wait to introduce myself until my return.

I look forward to both supporting and receiving support in a safe environment.

Welcome @MKJart

A month long vacation sounds wonderful, but I think I too would miss the comfort of my own bed!

You sound like you have lots of stuff going on in your life, much of it pretty hard to deal with. I'm sorry to read you have a resurgence of your PTSD symptoms, but great to hear you've found some calm from them in the past. Hopefully that gives you some optimism for the future. The trauma you experienced in the past will never disappear - it happened. But the way your mind processes and copes with it can change - those symptoms don't have to be permanent.

I hope the trauma subcommunity here on 7 cups can provide that safe and supportive place you're seeking. I've been humbled really, by how people who have been so hurt themselves, still have such reserves of empathy and compassion to share with other survivors. It's great to have you here :)

@DeborahUK

Thank you!

It felt wonderful to finally sleep in my own bed last night. In the future, I'll keep things at no more than 2.5 or 3 weeks.

I have great optimism for the future, despite what is coming up because I know it's possible. I've got more tools in my toolbox and I'm entering therapy from a place of safety instead of crisis this this time around. I've already noticed the difference in how I cope and process, though it doesn't reduce the impact of the flashbacks, nightmares and associated anxiety/panic while I'm in the middle of them. I'm able to come back to center faster once they pass though- I think that's great progress.

Thank you for your kind response.

Hey guys, just searching for some support at the moment. Having a ton of problems with nightmares, hypervigilance, and flashbacks. I haven't been sleeping much, my grades are dropping, and I honestly don't know where to go anymore.
