Traumatic Experiences Community Daily Check-In Tuesday March 27th 2018

Good morning/afternoon/evening everyone! How are you doing so far this week? Has it been good to you? Has it been a bit difficult? Either way, I hope you know we're all here for you, and this is a safe place where you can share as much or as little as you'd like. 💜

Today I'd like to talk a little about Spring Cleaning!

It can seem like such a daunting task, I know. BUT. Here's the thing, spring cleaning isn't just all about dusting, vaccuuming, and organizing your home. That wouldn't make for much of a trauma thread, now would it? Spring cleaning is also good for your mental health. So, work on clearing out the clutter in your mind and maybe try to rid yourself of a negative habit. Try (I know it's so hard at times!) to live in the moment as often as you can. Spring is such a beautiful time of year. Try to take note of the new beginnings happening all around you. Butterflies are my absolute favorite, because the thought of being able to just get up and fly away has always been so appealing to me. The caterpillars will be coming out soon, and that means the butterflies are soon to follow. Watch the flowers bloom and take peace in that new start to life (even if you have a magnolia tree like I do that blooms for a hot second and then all the petals fall lol!!).

How was your day/is your day looking/are you feeling today?

Feel free to stop in and say hi and let us know how you're doing 😊💜

This week has been difficult though I've had moments of spontaneous adventure..

Im actually fairly obsessed with cleaning.. Everything needs to be neat and tidy plus I find it kind of soothing in a way to just put on music and clean..

So glad you've had those moments of spotaneous adventure amidst the difficultties. Ad being soothed by cleaning to music sounds good.. I'm going to try this. x

I'm feeling pretty okay today.

A really weird thing happened to me two days ago - I'm not sure if this is the right thread to talk about this, but those check-ins are about how we are feeling, right? So I'll just talk about it and hope I'm not annoying anyone with it. I've been just lieing in bed, getting ready to go to sleep and I started thinking about my new friends at uni and how I can explain to them, what happened to my arm when I come back after spring break. (Long story short: I had writers cramp for over a year and it's back, so now it's covered with blue and green tape). Not such a big deal, I know. But suddenly the pictures in my head turned bad. I heard them telling me to stop overreacting and that I'm childish (the other students are at least 2 years oder than I am). It's really weird to explain, but my heart was pounding and my vision blurred and my head felt really, really light. I think it didn't even last for a minute and I experienced things like this before, but, you know, before I never really had a place were I could talk about it without feeling as if I'm going crazy. I'm sorry for writing such a long text, but I really wanted to get this off my chest...

@BeeLeigh - Super anxious today. So anxious I am feeling sick because of it and shaking and tearful. I'm okay thoigh. I mean, I'm not okay but I'm still here. My mind is scattered amd hard to focus or think logically or be present. I like the idea of cleaning brain clutter but don't know where to start and am not doing well, so may think on that later when my brain is functioning a bit better again. *hugs*

Hey trauma family!

Today was a really good day for me. I was able to motivate myself to do sports, eat healthy and spend time with family!

In general, my mental health is doing excellent surprisingly, but gladly! Havent had flashbacks in 2 months now, and didnt feel scared around my abuser when I saw him by accident a lot these months.. i am really glad i am recovering well. One year ago i was praying time would heal the inner wounds maybe someday - and it did.

i wish you all a great day. Big hug goes out to everyone here <3

@Hope3729

Glad to hear that today was a really good day for you! And that you are recovering well.. that's great. Its interesting when you look back to 12 months ago, it becomes clearer how far you have come. I'm wondering what you would say has contributed to this healing. Hugs back. x

Feeling pants, trying to spring clean my craft room today so your post is uncannily relevant LOL. Well more of a distraction than a spring clean if I'm honest, anything to get me out from under the duvet.

Hi, dear community! Do you think I can have complex post-traumatic stress disorder? I survived 18 years of domestic violence (both physical and psychical): father alcoholic with depressions, mother some personality disorder, not treated, she acted emotionally unstable and extremely cold at the same time, brother sociopat with Asperger

I just don't get why my doctors aren't calling me back when I leave detailed messages on what is wrong with me.

Sorry to hear this is being so difficult for you. I'm wondering if to make an appointment to see one doctor who you think you would be comfortable with. Then you could talk through your issues with this doctor and and hopefully get the support that you need. X

@rozie

If only someone would drive me to those 2 doctors in Portand that are 2.5 hours away I would go see those 2 that I trust with my life.

@BeeLeigh so many things keep getting brought up in the daily check in's that have been on my mind. I have actually been thinking about "Spring Cleaning" both literally and metaphorically. I've had the last year off of work so far - to work on my mental and physical health. Part of what I had hoped to do was get my home in order. I've kind of seen this as both an emotional and physical "holding onto" things from the past. Don't get me wrong, I'm not hoarding anyhting by any means, but I have boxes of things stuck away in my garage that I just haven't been able to bring myself to deal with. I've realized that there is an emotional reason to this. There are things from when my abusive partner suicided almost 20 years ago that I know I need to go through and deal with as part of my healing. I also have a good deal of remnants from our family home from when I up and moved myself and my 2 daughters from an emotionally abusive marriage 9 years ago. I have unpacked what we needed but basically left everything else in boxes. So I think spring cleaning for me is about cleaning away some emotional clutter as well as the actual physical cleaning.

Today, I'm feeling ok. I attended a sexual abuse survivors group for 2 1/2 hours this morning. It's a pretty heavy group but focussed around building skills rather than discussing trauma's. I'm noticing that I'm becoming a little more comfortable in this group setting around other women, and more willing to speak up, but also still easily irritated or becoming unfocussed / ungrounded in response to one person when they move around a lot or are unable to stay focussed on the topic. This is bothering me that I am so easily affected by another person in this way.

@BeeLeigh

Anyone else feel a little freaked out when you hear slamming doors in the distant like say you live in an apartment building and sharing a house with other people. OR hearing a raised masculine voice even if you can make out the words. Does anyone have an advice on how to dealing with it? Also does anyone have advice on also dealing with a constant crying child because seriously I am getting very concerned and anxieties the more days in the row since they moved in I hear the crying?

My day has been okay, lots of deep thoughts and awesome talks.

[Also this is a deeper and more problematic question; how do I deal with a family member slowly dying and than the prospect death and mourning someone healthily?]

@rissadawn I live in an apartment too and neighbours can be noisy. I find music helps, if it is late at night I use my earphones. Something nice and repetitive feels soothing because it's consistent and I can focus on that instead of the door slams lol.

As for grieving in a healthy way, there is a grief self-help guide that is totally awesome and will help you process the various stages of grief. I didn't grieve my dad for 11 yrs and it got to be such a big block in my head but the self-help guide gave me the courage to face it so I hope it helps you too heart https://www.7cups.com/grief/

@LifeIsMyCanvas I try to listening to music or something else but I can't do that all the time. And it feels like if their kid isn't scream crying, doors are being slammed. I am just not made to live in the city, I guess. Thanks for the advice. :)

Thank you for pointing me in the right direction, this is the first person I will be losing as an councious adult and actually close to so I know this will hurt a lot. I am also trying get a jump on dealing with it healthly as I have seen what unhealthy grief can do to a person. I am glad you found the support you needed. :)

Theres a little booklet we give out at work that Im pretty sure is called Death & Dying if you want me to get a copy scanned over to you. We have a few booklets about the dying process, and I can let you know what you can expect if youd like. Though I dont think thats very forum friendly...hang on..

@BeeLeigh

Thank you for the offer, but I will just look towards the grief guide and maybe do more research. It was a very nice offer but I don't want make you do extra work when you don't need to. This is just will be my first close loss and as an councious adult and I have had plenty of examples of what not to do so I am trying to make sure I find a healthy way to handle it.
