Good morning/afternoon/evening everyone!!

I'm not sure it's possible for me to be more exhausted than I am right now. I've gotten about 9-ish hours of sleep since Sunday. I'm seriously just so tired. So I hope you all enjoy this page that I found called "Why does Post Traumatic Stress Disorder make you so tired?"

Why does Post Traumatic Stress Disorder make you so tired?

I always thought napping was the past-time of children and the elderly… now I know its for people with PTSD too.

Your mind and body are more connected than you may realise: Its been estimated that the human mind is capable of producing 50% more stress than your body can handle. If your brain is producing more stress than your body can deal with, its going to let you know – this is usually through sheer and utter exhaustion!

Hormones: More specifically, cortisol, the stress hormone. During a trauma, cortisol helps desensitize us so we feel less pain, increases short-term memory function, and acts as a quick energy boost. However, when cortisol is present in higher levels for a prolonged period of time (as it is for PTSD sufferers) it can be responsible for memory loss, fatigue, and reduced serotonin levels.

Hypervigilance: The hyper vigilance that often accompanies PTSD can cause you to wake up repeatedly throughout the night. This broken sleep is likely to cause fatigue during the day.

The adrenal system: Cortisol and other stress hormones, are produced by your adrenal system. When theres an overload on the adrenal system, someone with PTSD might experience a variety of symptoms such as fatigue, exhaustion and an overload of stress.

The bottom line is that fatigue (and often inexplicable fatigue) very often accompanies symptoms of PSTD. If this is the case for you, be good to yourself – give yourself the rest your body calls for.

I will more than likely crash really hard tonight and just basically pass out when I get home from work, so I apologize if you comment here and don't receive a relatively quick response, but I promise you will receive a response at some point.

SO...

How was your day/is your day looking/are you feeling today?

Feel free to stop in and say hi and let us know how you're doing 😊💜

@BeeLeigh

I am diagnosed with HPA axis dysfunction, and reading this article, there are striking similarities with PTSD. I wonder about it. It's a question to ask my doctor, although I don't know that she'll be able to tell me.

Today I'm feeling tired on only 5 hours of sleep, and discouraged, because I am trying to recover from HPA axis dysfunction and it's not going so well at the moment (having a lot of trouble sleeping lately and haven't been eating as well). I just feel tired. It's hard, long work to recover, and I don't feel I have the support I always need. I also feel discouraged that I am spending so much time focusing on health, when I feel there are so many other things I would rather be doing (and "should" be doing).

*Hugs*

@singercrystalspirit

Hi Singer😊, I know that you feel a bit discouraged with regards to having to focus on your health. However, having time to recover is so important, because once recovered, you are then released to do all the things you need to do. A few months ago I was working way too much (doing too many shifts). I was hardly resting or sleeping, and I was tired all the time and emotionally drained. The physical and emotional signs that I needed to stop were there, but I just ignored them. I then came down with the flu/virus (the type of flu that puts you in bed for two weeks)! It was a Godsend as it forced me to stop and rest.

I know there are things you need to do right now, so this situation is frustrating for you. So I hope your recovery from HPA Axis Dysfunction will be speedily, and that you will get all the rest and support that you need. Sending hugs❤

Hey :) PTSD does make you so tired doesn't it :O I swear it must have contributed to numerous of my other physical health issues as well :O

I am doing... okay? I've had a migraine/cluster headache (I don't know which, seeing a neurologist next week) for 2 weeks and it only just broke on Sunday, so thats the longest I have ever had daily symptoms and its been pretty miserable. Able to go back to work this week though so thats been pretty cool :D

Anyway trying to keep my head up, had acupuncture today which helped so hopefully I am back on track :3 All this self care stuff is hard work guys xD

@Lilibuth12

Hey Lilbuth12😊, Sorry to hear about the migraine/cluster headaches. As a child I suffered from severe headaches (something to do with eye strain). So I know how debilitating it can be. Glad that it finally broke on Sunday and that acupuncture is helping. Sending hugs ❤

@MaschaV

Aww, that's so sweet Mascha, thank you! 😊

I know that knowing why can't magically make it all better, but maybe if you understand a little better it might be a bit less frustrating? I find it easier to be kind to myself when I'm not doing well when I know there's a legitimate reason 💜

@BeeLeigh

Maybe so. I had a better night last night.

It might sound strange but before I went to bed I gave all the little ones that wanted it a hug and a good night kiss. The others were satisfied with a 'good night'.

It helped me sleep peacefully. That was a nice discovery heart

@dynamicHemlock1736

Hi Dynamicsmiley, it sounds as if today's been a really tough day for you. Having to deal with the nightmares and the trigger must of been exhausting, sending hugs your wayheart. You also mentioned the conflict you had with your parents when you mentioned your mental health. Sorry that you did not receive the support or understanding that you needed. Some people find it really difficult to talk about certain subjects, therefore it makes it difficult for them to offer support. I hope the rest of the day will be relaxing and peaceful for you, and that you do something good for yourself, maybe a little pampering! Treat yourself to something nice, you deserve it!heart

huh, i guess that all makes sense! i never really thought about PTSD causing fatigue but i guess that it could really tire you out.

today's kind of sucked, honestly. i woke up to my knee dislocating in the middle of the night, so that just ruined my sleep. i would fall asleep for brief periods and then wake up worrying about whether it was going to happen again or not. my knee still hurts now and it's a bit swollen too so that makes walking extra difficult. i guess i've been, ironically enough to today's topic, hypervigillient and anxious since it happened.
