Traumatic Experiences Community Daily Check-in: Monday October 8th

Happy Monday Trauma Family!
For many of us, music can be a powerful tool in our self-care toolbox. For me, I have different go-to songs and artists depending on how I'm feeling or what I need.
Feeling happy and bubbly? I put on my long-time favorite, No Doubt.
Feeling angry? 90s hip hop is my favorite.
Feeling emotional? The soothing and funky vibes of some Red Hot Chili Peppers songs help.
I don't speak a lot about my personal experience with trauma, although some of you who I have spoken to in PMs do know my story. For me, one of my most difficult traumatic experiences of my life happened in early 2017. Beyonce's album, Lemonade, had been out almost a year at that time and I had heard and enjoyed some of the songs. But after experiencing that trauma, I found myself listening to that album on repeat. It really resonated with me and helped me sort out what I was feeling. Anger, betrayal, rage, forgiveness, empowerment.
- Is there a song, album or artist that helped you through trauma in your life? If you're comfortable sharing, what do you think it was about that music that helped?
- If this exercise is in any way triggering, please skip it. Instead, let us know your favorite music to self-care to or simply just stop by and say hello to start this week.

@Kate
The song "Never Too Late" by three days grace has always really resonated with me.
@incompl
I love me some 3 days grace, I listened to that album ALOT growing up :) Just gone and put it on now lol.
@Lilibuth12
They're a great band. It's a shame Adam Gontier left, but it is what it is.
Just going to say hi, kinda broke the walls of the dam so a lot coming out at the minute. Not in a good place 😭
@crimsonLime6525
That doesn't sound good :O I hope you are okay Lime! *Sends supportive vibes, a teddy and a blanket to hide under!*
@crimsonLime6525 Hej Lime, sorry to hear yer having a bit of a time. I'm about if you need or wish to chat.
Song or artist thats helped me through trauma.
That artist is always going to be Linkin Park, It was the soundtrack to alot of my trauma, I listened to those songs for years. All of the songs are about feeling out of place, wrong and damaged. I guess its what I needed to hear to feel not so isolated growing up.
A few others because this is amusing me:
Guilty pleasure: Nickleback
Relaxation: Arthur Beatrice – Working Out
Empowerment: Celien Dion – Treat her like a Lady
Nostalgia: Now 64 (the second CD) xD
Okay i'll stop there :D I listen to all kinds of music ahahha :) I normally just pick a song and put it on repeat for a week or so :P :)
@Lilibuth12
nice soundtrack you have there
and lol Nickelback, definitely a guilty pleasure
@ImperfectCherry indeed guilty lol
Hej alle popping in to say just that pretty much lol
I listen to such a wide variety of musik (an a severe hatred of jazz) I can't state aní as a favourite
But playing musik an shakin my bummie when things are overwhelming always does na trick.
@Kate
I have some music I listen to, but I can't really go there right now.
I was all set to have a good day today, and for the first hour it was okay. Now I'm sitting in my office trying desperately to hold it together. So much going on right now.
@practicalIdeal2007
Hey Ideal, sorry to hear your day turned into a bad one... sending you lots of strength to hold it together as long as you are at work and hopefully you find sth nice to do to relax a bit when you get home
i did not realize that i still had a dam wall up regarding the sound of my father's voice,, (he's long gone), until i heard this UTube of Hein Braat Chanting in Hindu (a language which i do not speak). water began to run out of my eyes, and for the first 20 times i listened again, it happened again, until that reservoir of grief was exhausted, and peacefulness took its place.

@GustyOne4U That's really cool. I'm glad you found joy in it.
@Kate
I always listen to Baz Luhrmann- Everybody's Free to Wear Sunscreen

It really helps me feel like life is going to be ok no matter what happens and that not everything is my fault. I have listened to much music over the last 15 years to cope with life. I really find music that tells me positive things is good such as special - willow beats
when i am sad or angry I listen to some really dark music :( ICP :( sometimes.
hmmmm Sad Sara Bareilles album Little Voice. but i just love her work in general.
@RiverTamer102409 Love that first one big time
Looking into na others
@Raveninthelabrynth
Thank youuu, I love music so much and there has been so many things to get through.
@RiverTamer102409 yep, everything but jazz lol
just noise lol
When I was in my abusive environment, all I would listen to was My Chemical Romance, haha. Even though a lot of bad things happened to me, that band always set my imagination running wild (they're pretty theatric) and gave me an energy when I was so emotionally fatigued. Additionally, the lead singer, Gerard Way, is also the artist of a very successful few comic books: one of which is The Umbrella Academy, which gets its own Netflix show February 2019 (HELL yeah). As an aspiring visual artist, he sincerely inspired me to succeed and aim for my dreams, despite my lemons given to me. I don't listen to them much any more (I'm in a happier place, so the edgy theme they provide doesn't tickle me as much) and I used to be embarrassed about liking them; but with recovery and more self-compassion, I can acknowledge that their tunes still go hard af. Haha.
Nowadays, I listen to a lot of Paul Simon. He fills me up inside when I'm feeling hollow. He has beautiful things to say, and his music presents each thought as eloquently as the lyrics he writes.
A song I can't listen to often, or else I'll cry, is Better Son/Daughter by Rilo Kiley. It's almost as if it's written for me: every detail is exactly how my life has felt, and how my life continues to feel. It has a marching beat to let us know to carry on, and a happy ending to let us know that we're marching toward something better.
@betterchoices Safe Hugs if you want them, an hel yeah on those musikal suggestions.
lately I found miself looking up Paul Simon wit Ladysmith Black Mumbouza (sp???) Dimonds on the soles of her shoes.
ja much peace and calm there
@betterchoices
I love Rilo Kiley
Silver lining is one of my trauma songs
@kate
I listen to lots of music. Every morning on my walk i listen to music. My favorites arent very well known artists. I cant really listen to songs that helped me through my trauma, its wayy too triggering. I wasnt really safe for a long time so its hard to go back to that time. But mostly i play. I havent really lately, sometimes i think i withhold it as a punishment, idk. But i can sit at my piano and just play and play. And thats when i get to leave my head and get a break from all of this. I like my guitar too but its not quite the same. Music has saved me many times.
@Npepsicola Hej Pepsi good to see you. Ya I can identify with that. Musik is powerful and does dictate moods. I totally avoid exciting or aggressivemusik when I need grounding. But I love it too.
everything but Jazz ;) lol
@Raveninthelabrynth
Heyyyy. Its good to see you. Ive missed you. Ahh see i like jazz, like some new orleans jazz, some nat king cole. More fun to play than listen to tho.
