Happy Monday Trauma Family!

For many of us, music can be a powerful tool in our self-care toolbox. For me, I have different go-to songs and artists depending on how I'm feeling or what I need.

Feeling happy and bubbly? I put on my long-time favorite, No Doubt.

Feeling angry? 90s hip hop is my favorite.

Feeling emotional? The soothing and funky vibes of some Red Hot Chili Peppers songs help.

I don't speak a lot about my personal experience with trauma, although some of you who I have spoken to in PMs do know my story. For me, one of my most difficult traumatic experiences of my life happened in early 2017. Beyonce's album, Lemonade, had been out almost a year at that time and I had heard and enjoyed some of the songs. But after experiencing that trauma, I found myself listening to that album on repeat. It really resonated with me and helped me sort out what I was feeling. Anger, betrayal, rage, forgiveness, empowerment.

- Is there a song, album or artist that helped you through trauma in your life? If you're comfortable sharing, what do you think it was about that music that helped?

- If this exercise is in any way triggering, please skip it. Instead, let us know your favorite music to self-care to or simply just stop by and say hello to start this week.

@Kate

I'm finally home after a 16 hr work day. So I'm going to try this again. I've been listening music for a couple of hours now.

Linkin Park is my go to band. There were certain songs that were released during particular moments that resonate with me. These are a few of them.

In the End - 2000
Somewhere I belong - 2003
What I've Done - 2007
Castle of Glass - 2012
One More Light - 2017
Battle Symphony - 2017

I didn't hear the songs released in 2017 until this year.

Bittersweet Symphony by The Verve.

I need to hear some sounds that recognize the pain in me, yeah.

This line sums up why I always turn to music to flush out any bad situation out of my system. But basically this whole song is about my life.

Sad Songs (Say So Much) by Elton John is pretty relatable, too.

Brave by Sara Bareilles was on repeat when I decided on coming out about having depression and anxiety to the world. I was pretty sick of people telling me how to feel when they dont even know the bare minimum of the amount of **** I have been going through since I was a kid.

Demi Lovato is my go to artist when I am struggling. Her songs are relatable. I can relate to every word in "For the Love of a Daughter" and most of "Father" and "Sober" really get to me too. I also love "Believe in Me" because in the end she says "Now I believe in me". I also love "Warrior" I have the word Warrior tattooed on my song and it reminds me that I am stronger than all of the things that have tried to destroy me. Demi Lovato is my favorite because she is real about her mental health and she has spent most of her career advocating for people with substance abuse, eating disorders, and other mental illness and her story is what gave me courage to seek treatment several years ago. I can't wait to see what she creates when she comes out of treatment this time. It's sad that she relapsed, but with her passion and influence I think she will turn it into something that helps others.

Another favorite right now is Head Above Water by Avril Lavigne, she just released it last week on her birthday. The song came from her battle with Lyme Disease that almost took her life.

I just love songs with a powerful story behind them.
