Traumatic Experiences Community Daily Check-in Tuesday 18th July 2017

Hiya all!

Its already Tuesday evening here so this afternoon I've been pondering on this post... usually by now its clear, but not this time. So we'll see how it goes. Something I read recently comes to mind.

"When a child growing up is traumatised often she has to 'act normal' The wounded part gets split off and the pain or shame becomes a secret even to the child herself. A part of a growing person gets stuck in a young place. " Jane Rowan. And when we respond out of that young place we sometimes say to our selves., "well that was childish" or "why on earth did i do that..just like a five year old."Or others may notice that we seem to have become the child, maybe the needy child. The voice of the inner child can overwhelm the voice of the adult that we now are.Yes the inner child is there and is the memory our early years and the decisions our young mind made as a result of those experiences.

Becoming aware of the child within, beginning to listen to this voice can provide information and feelings for the adult. Some of it will be painful, some of it will even be fun as the child holds the key to "playfulness" In getting to know our child we can more easily understand how our brain has been wired by trauma, and begiin to change the circuit....change the beliefs and behaviors. And we can become our own inner parent, and give our child the love and nurture that they didn't have and deserved to have. And I think in parenting our own children we often take care of the child within.... more than we may ever realize.

Inviting you to share with us... How do you get in touch with your inner child? When you find your self stuck in that young place, what do you do? How has listening to the child within been helpful? ... or about your day, and how its going for you.

This is your space and a safe place. Love to hear from you!

Great post, @rozie :)

Will contemplate the questions and come back to them later on.

Doing my best to stay as calm and grounded as possible as I try to break down a full day into manageable portions. Preparing to emerge from isolation to restock food supplies, refill prescriptions, and, later, go to the long-delayed psychiatrist appointment (thoughts of which draw now-familiar anxious feelings to the surface, though I know that it's especially important right now, due to how my symptoms have manifested recently). Even though I have feelings of dread, i know that everything is going to be ok.

Just have to keep telling myself that.

I still blame myself and meds didn't make me feel better...worried online talk about trauma. Sometimes wonder do I like to much complicate stuff...

Yes think it can get a bit complicated.. lots of infornation, lots of ideas, lots to do, lots to think about.. Wonder if its about keeping it simple... deciding what fits for us and talking one step at a time. Let's keep it simple!

Great post @rozie. My answer is two part, I suppose. It wasn't until I started learning about psychology and mental health that I began to fully understand how some of my personality traits were immature defense mechanisms. In other words, the child that still hadn't learned to cope in a mature way in some situations.

Second, I think the traits I decided to understand and work on first were the ones I thought were undesirable, the traits that I had grown up feeling bad about.

This is probably wrong but it's my truth. I hate inner children, it's not my bag. Don't believe in it.

Now I've got to drag my tired and sick body downstairs to use a public bathroom for bathing (which isn't triggering at all) and drag my unhappy *** to work. Yay.

Made a move for self-preservation of my weakness? Of my sanity? Who knows.

Asked if I could work from home today. I can see my mom grimacing now. I should've just bucked up. But I'm like a person with only so many spoons and I used all of yesterday's plus half of Today yesterday.

I just can't face people today. I can't bring myself to use that bathroom with people around. (We had a pipe bust in our apartment).

It's not good enough but it's what I'm doing. I don't want to get anyone else sick even tho I don't even know if I'm contagious. But mainly I just can't face life.

If I could get to a place in my mind where my half-a**ed efforts were acceptable maybe I'd be productive. But I'm not fooling anyone anymore. Not even myself.

And your truth is fine Jane. i knew when i wrote this it probably woulnd't be everyone's "cup of tea" and it felt a bit of a risk that it may be too much for some,, but maybe fit for others.

Thinking of you and hoping your day got a little better.

@rozie Sometimes I feel childish, as you are saying. What I do, is I treat that child like a child. I don't shame that child and tell them, "You are supposed to be an adult! Start acting like one!" Because that typically makes things worse from my experience. Instead, I tell the child that it's going to be ok. I shush them, I give them water, I feed them food, I take care of them. In essence, I'm saying I baby myself. But that's not wrong. It's just taking a more gentle approach.

@Behindhazeleyes Love the way you take care of the child gently. Listening to the voice, calming and soothing the child... just what is needed.

Sorry late to post. Been bad stressful day and covering intensive care tomorrow for first time in year. Dreading getting triggered.

My inner child gets brought up alot by therapist. I apparenrly havent connected to her since i was a child. That little four year old who loved reading and had read since she could pick up a book, has been beaten by all the voices and the bullies and now me. She is hurt and lost and broken and has no voice. She never grew to fill my shoes let alone my mums.

All our inner children need a break. A rest from the cruelty they had and continue to hear from us. I wish i could forgive myself.

I feel everyones pain on here and wish you all some respite.

Hi Rozie,

I echo Kite when I say this is both timely and appropriate for me. I have been doing an inner child art workshop (self paced on my own).

I've been trying to get in touch with my inner child for a while. We are finally starting to see each other without trepidation. Rain also posted information for a inner child writing exercise of using different hands to speak with her. I've been doing it almost every day where I write to her and she writes back with my non-dominant hand. It's interesting.

Thank you for posting this, I'm learning to reparent her with compassion. A cool process that has ups and downs.

Mary

@MKJart

Hi Mary

Doing the art workshop sounds like another cool way to be in touch with your inner child. I've heard some say that they sing to their inner child, perhaps a lullaby to soothe. Creative ways, different ways, whichever fits for this time. And yes the writing exercise posted by Rain is a good way to communicate with and give voice to your inner child.

Agree it has its ups and downs. I want to affirm you for your reparenting with compassion.

Im going to try and write this without triggering myself too much.

I grew up in an abusive home. My dad was someone I tried hard to avoid on a daily basis... he scared me, I would avoid crossing paths with him in corridors because I feared what he could say or do. It was like that every single day...

My mum was initially a good mom when we were little I've been told, but she suffered an assault when I was 6 and since then she was never the same... she had/has severe PTSD and I developed a serious separation anxiety disorder. I could never leave her, I couldn't go to girl guide camps, I couldn't go sleep at my friends or cousins house. I was just so terrified of leaving her. But at the same time she was so unwell she kept pushing me away, often leaving the country for extended periods of time which made me sick with anxiety, especially that I was left behind with my abusive dad and brother. I hate to even say that but I guess that's what they were.

Move always felt like Ive missed out on being a child, and now as an adult I often find myself having childish reactions or behaviors. And I don't realize this, other people will point it out to me. It's like the needs of that child that I once was were never met. And Ive had a real hard time with accepting that I'm growing up lately. Because I know there are so many things I will never get to do and be. It's sort of like mourning the childhood I never got.

I don't know why I'm saying all this here or even now, why I'm putting myself through this when I've been so good at evading the way I feel, but I guess as I'm about to become a mom myself I'm coming to realize just much more pressing this mourning process is now.

I feel like I had to grow up too fast, I had to be tough, I had to cry alone, I had dissociate from moments that were physically unbearable. And until I spoke about stuff I just thought this was life, that it was all normal. I didn't know any different. Well I knew things were different because when I grew up and went to friends houses, i felt safe. When I was little, I wanted so bad for people to think I was a pretty and good girl and maybe, just maybe, they'd wanna take me home with them and I'd be "saved". But nobody ever did that... every day I would convince myself that must mean I'm worthless, I'm not special, I am ugly and stupid and just unwanted and a mistake. And deep down inside I still feel that way, I yearn for acceptance and for people to like me. So I try and be funny, I try and be positive and good but still it never feels enough.

And there are some days that I feel so tired to keep fighting, to keep that child inside feeling safe and loved, and there are days I just don't know that I can do that anymore. Sometimes I wanna give up and I think that would make a lot of people's lives easier, that really my presence in this world is unwanted and not needed.

I feel like had that child somehow died, nobody would have really taken notice. They'd have held a funeral, and people would have cried and said what a good girl I was and then that would have been it. Life for my family would have gone on as usual and I'd be just a distant vague memory and vanished ashes. And a part of me feels that way still today.

So i guess what I'm trying to say is I feel broken, that inner child was broken and I'm still that same child with a few years extra, more time to think and try and make sense of senseless things but not being able to. And trying with all my might to just make do, make by, keep breathing and pushing every day to prove to myself and to other people that maybe I have a place in this world.

I have a child on the way and Ive come to be overwhelmed with sadness and guilt that I may not be able to be the kind of mother I wish I could be. The kind he truly deserves. I fear every day that my life experiences, the fact I never knew what a good parent was, are going to mean that I'm going to fail at this and that I'm going to cause yet another child to suffer.

Some days this consumes me so much that im totally panicked at the idea of being a mom, and I'm so full of doubt it kills me. I just want what is best for him, I want him to be happy and strong and feel loved and wanted and all the things I never got to be and feel. But I just don't know how to do those things. I myself can't say I feel those things, how can i transmit them to my child? Will he feel my pains? My anxieties? Will he see the bags under my eyes and the sorrow in my heart when I have nightmares and flashbacks? Will he see through me the torment and bad things in the world that I will want to shelter him from?

I just don't know and it all scares me so much right now... so much...

Lilly congratulations on your baby. I think the fact you even worry about all this, means you won't cause the same hurt. When I read your post, I could feel your care and love for him already!!! I think you're going to be aa amazing mom!!!! You'll rock him and protect him and teach him!!! And the times that get hard for you and scare you, maybe that's the part you reach out and get help with. It's so hard I know! But maybe a counselor can talk to you about helping your baby and calming your fears. I bet the minute you hold your baby your heart will know what to do. I will pray for you! ❤️

Oh Lily, my heart goes out to you as i read your story that you are sharing here. I think what you are saying fits so well with today;s post. As it says the growing part gets stuck at a younger place... when you say others notice you being childish its about the child who didn't get what she needed. And hearing a lot of grief, grieving for the losses of what might have been in your childhood, for what you feel you missed, for the loss of innocence, and grieving for the inner child. Feeling the pain of loss like this is hard and part of healiing the child and your self. How can you comfort her, tell her it wasn't fair that she deserved more than this. Maybe in writng to her, in poetry, or in miusic, singing to her..

We learn to put on a fake personna to protect our selves, to hide the unmentionable, the pain and the hurt. So nobody sees. We hope that others will like us and find us acceptable.. like as you say in being funny. But its only when our story is validated, we are heard and understood, that we are able to begin the journey to healing and then recover or discover our true self. Then we can be authentically who we are and find our place in the world. You are on this journey Lily and my hope for you is that you continue to walk step by step, knowing thatt there is hope for a different future for you and your new family to be

@rozie. Wow, what an insightful question, I am not sure I even acknowledge my inner child, most of my childhood has, been forgotten or buried, alot of hurt I still carry, and I still blame the people that I thought should have shown me love and care.

@jr50 Yes it takes time, as much time as you need. As you say a lot is buriied or forgotten. That was the only way you coulld deal with it. Just being aware that the inner child is still there may be a beginning.
