Traumatic Experiences Community Daily Check-in Tuesday 21st August 2018
Hello lovely trauma family,
Who doesn't love a story.. I think most of us do. So I'm going back to very old stories today. To Aesop and his fables which he originally told in the 6th centurt BC, and these were later recorded in Latin. In the 17th century a French poet, Jean La Fontaine rewrote the fables as we know them.. There are favourites like "The Hare and the Tortoise" and "The Lion and the Mouse.' But the one I'm going to tell you is a lesser known one.Its called"the Oak and the Reed.".....
"A very large oak was uprooted by the wind and thrown across a stream. It fell amongst some Reeds, which it thus addressed, "I wonder how you, who are so light and weak, are not so entirely crushed by these strong winds." They replied : "You fight and contend with the wind, and consequently are destroyed: while we on the contrary bend before the least breath of air and therefore remain unbroken and escape."
To bend with the wind is to be resilient and adaptable. Dr Wayne Dyer, author and speaker, talks about bending rather than being broken. He suggests if we are wiling to adapt by allowing ourselves to initially experience the potentially damaging energy, and bend as the trees do in the wind, we can use the strength of the wind to make us stronger and preserve us. Let the wind blow through without resistance, and don't be afraid of the outcome.
And we with branches intertwined can bend with the wind, and if we lean rather than break, we will survive, we will grow stronger, no matter what. "I saw how it bends, flowing with the wind." Lao Tsu
How is your day going ? What does this fable say to you? What is your favourite story? Or pop in to say hi! You're welcome here. This is your space and a safe place. Love from rozie and mas. x

@rozie My favourite childhood storys was the story of Icarus. I found it fascinating, that they could just build Wings and fly away from their prison.
I'mfeeling okay. Still grieving for my granpa, but I found out how calming it is to read the messages people write about him. Many people publish little stories about him online on the website of the newspaper and on the website of the undertaker and light candles for him and I read every single message. And it makes me feel less Alone. So many people loved him and cared about him. His live touched so many people and he had an impact on so many lives. I don't know, it just really helps me with grieving and makes me so proud. I want to be exactly like him.
@sincerePark336
That is so precious! It is very comforting to know that he was loved and you all share a same grief.
I don't know the story of Icarus. I think I have heard the name but can't remember the story. I will look it up, it sounds interesting.
Hugs!
@nolongerafraid really, read it! I know it was a story created to teach kids the right mixture of being humble and ambitious, but it always made me dream of inventing Wings just like this
@sincerePark336 I looked it up on wiki. It could be interesting, the ending seems a bit dramatic but it is mythology and that is usually tragic. Thanks, I'll go to the library and find it.
Would be cool to have wings
I used to dream I could fly. It was always when I was cornered or being chased but I was able to fly away.
Hi Rozie
Hello,
I am ok
I'm doing ok today. I finally have come to the realization that I have blocked out most of my childhood. My daughter asks me simple questions about growing up and I can't answer them. I never cared whether I remembered anything before. May have to bring it up with my therapist. I'm not sure what else to do.
@RedHawk6547 It is good to hear you are doing okay.
I think it is normal that you would like to tell your kids about your young years and that they would want to know too. It's part of who they are, their heritage so to speak. It's good to talk to your therapist about this and ask for help. There might be a good reason why you can't and did not want to remember much and then it is helpful and safe to have someone with you to explore that.
Im not okay. I keep telling myself itll get better, itll get better, itll get better. but whats going to change
Hi @appreciative, welcome to our Trauma Fam,
I am sorry you're not feeling okay. We all know these times and sometimes it is okay to not be okay. Denying yourself to feel bad and wishing it would get better if you are not paying attention to it is not helping. I have been there and tried that but it does not work.
I find it is hard work to feel better but it is so worth it in the end.
I am glad you are reaching out, that is a great first step. Is there anything you would like to share that we could help you with? We would love to support you.
Hugs if you want them.
Hi
@forcefulTurtle3938
Hi there! I don't think I have met you yet? Welcome to our Trauma Fam.
Feel free to share or not share. We are here and you are welcome to be you.
@forcefulTurtle3938
Hi 🐢
Im sorry, I dont mean to be so down, I know Im new, I just felt like I had to say that
@appreciative Just because you are new does not mean you cannot feel down, right?
We are here for you in the good and the bad.
Hey :)
I find bending with the wind really difficult. When people first started saying these kinda things to me I was fighting my parents on every little thing with no idea how to pick my battles. I guess I learned over time that I was exhausting and upsetting myself more than anyone else, but when I first heard it it felt to me like someone was invalidating all the struggles I had had as of my own making. I now realise that just because you bend with the wind does not mean you are a push over or that you lose yourself or you are weak. It just means that you can stay yourself despite what others do, flexability is stronger than being rigid.
@Lilibuth12 That does make sense, you are absolutely right. Thanks for making that clear. 💖
@Lilibuth12
Thank you for sharing this with us. I agree, bending with the wind is not so easy to understand. I think you have expressed this very well. Its not about being a pushover or weak, Its actually staying yourself despite what others may do. It can be more effective and resilient to be flexible rather than rigid. Just as the reeds were. x
