Traumatic Experiences Community Daily Check-in Wednesday 13th December 2017
Hello hello hello!
Today I'd like to touch in on a word many people who have gone through trauma know all too well:
NIGHTMARES.
They're scary, wake us up, and remind us of the scars we have inside of us. So since it's something I feel is important, I'm going to give three things that have helped me supress nightmares and even overcome them at times!
1. Write it all down
For me, I find that the more stressful my day was, the more likely I am to have a nightmare. I would write down all of the negative things on my mind first onto paper then all of the positive things so the bad goes into the paper and I think of the good things that happened that day! Another way to approach this is to reach out to a listener on 7 Cups to talk before bed
Other people also find tracking and documenting nightmares actually helps them go down and even make people aware of what is a nightmare and what is not.
2. Exercise or relax
I love doing yoga before bed! It gets my muscles stretched, relaxed, and my mind off current events and past events. It also helps me stop worrying so much about the future. Other people find a run or a swim can be really invigorating but if that doesn't sound like something you want or can do, a warm shower/bath, a hot drink, and/or a good book can really work wonders. Relaxing and destressing before sleeping can help immensely in swaying nightmares. Other good ideas are playing with a pet, grounding, listening to music, sitting outside, letting your muscles become less tense, writing a creative story, cleaning or finishing chores, and more!
3. Identifying the source and making a plan
Did something happen recently that reminded you of a stressful event? Have you been worrying about something a lot? Is your room even just too hot or too cold? Are you currently ill? Identifying what has changed recently may help you find out why you've been having bad dreams lately. After that, you can create a course of action! While the nightmares go on, create a plan on how to take care of yourself when you wake up if you have a nightmare then follow through with that plan if needed. It can also help to figure out how to make the situation or thing stressing you out seem less stressful.

So how has your day been everyone? And do you have any tactics for battling nightmares? I can't wait to hear what you all have to say today

Sorry for the small type everyone, school is putting "12 point font" into my head right now ^^||

12-Point Times New Roman, Double Spaced, APA format
Makes forum default font look enormous, yeah? XD

I tend to do deep breathing and relaxation techniques before I go to bed. This normally makes me feel more peaceful and chilled. Also I try to deal with any negative emotions, particular!y anger as this. can effect my sleep and trigger a nightmare. Another thing I do (if there is time) is try to process my day. This just means taking some time to sit down and think about my day, what happened who did I interact with, did anything upset me? Did something good happen? Processing just gives me an overview of my day, but more importantly helps me to understand how I am feeling. So that pent up emotions are not released into my subconscious, and manifesting through my dreams.

Thank you for sharing this! This can really help others with this issue, it's so important to talk about this!
@Diandra
Thank you Diandra 💗
when I have a nightmare
I get up and won't go back to bed
I pretty much just have SSRI dreams now. Theyre uh...not exactly scary. Theyre mostly just confusing. Some of them can be a little scary, but none of them are even remotely based in reality which just makes it confusing. Im okay with waking up confused instead of scared :)
@BeeLeigh
Hi Bee!
It sounds like you have a handle on what youre experiencing fairly quickly after waking up. I am just curious if you keep something close by that helps you with the confusion. Maybe something to help ground you? Some people can go right back to sleep with the knowledge of the cause, others tend to take a while to reorient themselves.
Can you offer any suggestions for those who tend to get caught in the confusion? 💛
@Compassionatelistener108
I mostly just wake up and go whaaaaaat was that? Cuz theyre a little crazy. Like, an inflatable ship flying through the sky and bouncing on the ground while Im walking down the street with my brother. Or me walking through a house by myself, but the house had had a fire and the family that lived there had all died, but they hadnt left the house. And then Im just confused cuz idk where those things could even be coming from! Theyre just completely made up. Theyre not at all based in any form of reality. There was an especially crazy one that involved some weird hotel type place and secret passages and idek. That one was a whole new level of weird. Im still okay with this substitution of weird over scary though.
@BeeLeigh
I knew you would have an interesting answer! Some of those sound a little scary but I understand that it helps when they aren
@Compassionatelistener108
You know, the house one was a little uh...maybe
Hi Honey,
I am sorry this is so late but it is an important topic. I find that I still have nightmares or night terrors when the amount of external stress is very high.
Thankfully, it is not very common anymore but life can still sneak up on me sometimes. Daily Meditation practice has helped me tremendously. It is consistent during good times and challenging ones. With each day I practice, my ability to settle my thoughts becomes easier. It simply makes things far more stable no matter what comes my way.
I also love to journal, have a nice cup of hot tea, try to enjoy being outside even if it is to have lunch and go for a brief walk.
Another thing that helps me is humor. I have some shows that I watch that are certain to make me smile.
Thank you again for all you do honey! It is greatly appreciated.

Have you tried to sort of flip the script on your nightmares? Like, when you wake up, even if you feel scared, think of the content more analytically than emotionally. More like,
@BeeLeigh
Hi Bee,
Thank you for these suggestions. I rarely have them anymore but when I do I automatically reach for a couple of tactile objects that I keep next to my bed. I am analytical though so your ideas would definitely help when I travel and allow me to be less dependent on objects.
Thank you, Bee 💛
