How and when did you confess to your family and/or friends that you were in an abusive (mental, emotional or physical) relationship?

Asking because I know I should tell them or somebody but I can't because I'm scared that they would judge me or not understand.

Before this relationship I couldn't understand for the life of me why women stayed in abusive relationships and now that I'm in that position myself, I can't understand for the life of me WHY I can't seem to talk about it or bring myself to leave.

Oh I am so sorry that you are in an abusive relationship @pioneeringBranch1564... but really glad that you recognize and understand what is going on. . At the same time I know from my own experience that it is not easy to tell others, and yet it is the very time that you need support. Suggest you think about someone you could talk who would be able to understand and give you this help.. Or there may be an organization in your area that provides support for people in this situation. And remember that its a risky time when you leave and its important to have a plan and support. Thinking of you and hoping you find the help you need.

@rozie thank you so much for your response. I'm still really in a state of confusion and I'm realizing that I really don't have anyone to talk to. Leaving is even harder than usual because I really have to graduate in the next 4 weeks. Getting my degree means everything to me, I've been in college five years and I just can't walk away now. I have no job because my bf convinced me to quit a year ago to focus on my studies.

@pioneeringBranch1564

Yes I know its not easy.... and sounds like completing this study is top priority for you now... and well done! Please look after your self and seek the support you need. Maybe have a chat 1-1 with a listener here. All the best.

Hey, I hear you. Sorry to hear you're in this situation. I left an abusive relationship 6 months ago. It was really hard to admit to my family and friends, and some people I haven't told, but generally I was just really honest. It sucked and hurt and was so hard. Congrats on getting your degree! I wish you all the best in that. Maybe looking into safety plans or even just researching more would be helpful.

Sorry to hear about your situation. In my experience, telling someone was the first step of really understanding the situation so it really is the place to start.

It took me a long time to tell anyone tbh and it started as a bit of joking and telling someone in little teeny tiny bits. I just couldn't go from casual chat to telling someone that a person they knew aswell (and thought that he was the sweetest guy in the world) abused me both mentally and physically. But revealing those bits to my friend got her worried and the fact that someone believed me and took it seriously was a huge wake-up call.

I hope you get the courage to tell someone, because it really helps to put things into perspective. They care about you and they will believe you. You can do this.
