Hi everyone,

I’m going to try to put some thoughts into words about something from my past that’s been coming back to me lately. It’s something I’ve never really talked about until now, and it feels a little messy, but I need to get it out.

When I was around 11 years old, I used to play a game called Roblox. I was a really creative kid—I loved making friends and expressing myself through roleplaying. For a while, it was just fun and harmless. Then I met someone a bit older through mutual friends in the game. He seemed friendly and we played together often, but things shifted.

He started bringing up topics that felt off to me, and eventually, he separated me from the group and introduced me to more mature forms of roleplaying. I didn’t understand what was happening at the time. He was my friend, so I trusted him. As time went on, these interactions became more frequent. Sometimes I didn’t want to go along with it, but he would insist. Because I trusted him, I didn’t really question it.

Eventually, I gave him some personal contact info so we could talk outside the game. We even used another app to continue chatting when I couldn’t play. His messages became increasingly inappropriate, though I didn’t fully understand that at the time. Looking back, I was naive—and far too young to be in those kinds of conversations.

Eventually, my mom found out. She called the authorities, and I got in a lot of trouble. I was grounded for months. I think at the time everyone was scared, and no one really explained what had happened or helped me process it.

Now that I’m older, the memories are resurfacing—and I’ve started realizing how deeply it affected me. Even though it happened online, it felt very real, and it left a lasting impact on my emotional well-being. For a long time, I questioned whether it even counted as something serious. But I’ve come to understand that it does.

I was taken advantage of. I see that clearly now. I’m thinking about seeking therapy, even though it feels strange to bring up something that happened so long ago and over the internet. But I know it still lives in me.

Thanks for reading. I just needed to say this out loud somewhere.

@Strawbarry I'm sorry this happened to you. Unfortunately, this is an incredibly common experience, children (especially young girls) are very often groomed online when they're too young to have the tools or ability to deal with it, or even to realize what's going on. I too received this kind of approach, same goes for many other girls I know. These experiences can be very different from girl to girl depending on how long and how far the matter goes, but it can have a true, deep and long-lasting impact. It can be incredibly frustrating and humiliating to realize how we were played with.

I'm sorry your family reacted that way: the contact between you and your abuser was cut, which is good, but you shouldn't have to go through trouble and be punished for things you weren't even able to fully understand. You were the victim, not the one looking for trouble. That was none of your fault and you shouldn't have to pay the price.

It's absolutely ok to seek support! Therapy is a good option if you're still experiencing long-lasting effects of that experience, that's nothing strange or shameful. Feel free to talk about it, to seek support, to take of yourself, to do eveything you need to process it all and feel better. I wish you the best!

@Aayla Thank you for your kind words. It's something that's been in the recesses of my mind. It just recently resurfaced. It's not something I really wanted to think about, but I know if I want to grow than I have to address it at some point.

I don't think I should've been punished, but maybe that's the only way my mom could think of protecting me. I don't hold anything against her, having your child be exploited without your knowledge isn't something any parent wants to go through. Though, I do wish she talked to me about it after instead of it being brushed under the rug.

It's something I pushed into the crevasses of my mind without properly understanding what happened to me. I'm 20 now and just unpacking it all, but I'm glad I'm coming to understand myself more and wanting to reach out for help.

I'll be looking into therapy soon.

You were 11. A kid. You weren't old enough, didn't understand. You didn't deserve to be punished for something an older man did, grooming and trying to be intimate with a child.

It is serious. It may have given you PTSD. And you have every right to feel whatever way you feel, or to have confusing feelings that you can't understand or express, or no feelings at all. No one has the right to make you feel bad about having feelings about someone, especially a grown adult, taking advantage of you.

I've been taken advantage of before, so many times... I've been there too. *hugs*
