A terrible thing happened

April 2nd, 2016

So at my college this past week, a boy took his own life in a terrible way. I wasn't best friends with him but we were in the same writing class and had talked several times, so its really been bothering me. I personally have been struggling with anxiety and depression the past couple months and this has just shaken me up so much, and I can't stop thinking about it and wondering if that's the point I'm going to reach..

@Kmotts you are doing the right thing in reaching out. I'm sorry for your loss. Anxiety and depression are really normal feelings, especially in college. We don't talk about it much, but 1 in 3 college students struggle with some sort of emotional challenge. It is a difficult part of life and college often brings its own stressors. You are definitely not alone in your experience. Also, when someone commits suicide it can feel shocking to us. It is hard for our brain to process it. That is also very normal. So, if you find your brain returning to it that is okay; it may just be trying to make sense of a challenging situation. Having anxiety and thinking about this suicide doesn't at all mean that you are suicidal. However, if you have suicidal thoughts for yourself, then that is an indication. In that situation, it can be very good to reach out to the national suicide hotline, or correpsonding service in your country, and or talk with someone at your college or university counseling center.
