Stop blaming him
Recently I moved home with my parents after 5 years of living independently. My dad is the source of my trauma. Most of it was emotional/verbal abuse. My dad's already started making hurtful comments directed at me and it's only been a few days. The things he's saying are pretty minor really, but it's dredging up old emotions from the trauma, so I'm responding to these little things as if they're bigger things. Today in therapy my therapist told me I have to stop blaming my dad for things and start taking responsibility. But I don't know how to do that because I don't feel responsible for things. My dad treated me awfully growing up, I developed C-PTSD and BPD and I do things that are unhealthy because I didn't learn the proper way to cope with situations. I do things the way I do because that's how I learned to survive. It may be maladaptive, but it keeps me alive. I just can't understand how I'm supposed to stop blaming my dad. I know I'm responsible for my behaviors and actions now, but I feel like she wants me to take responsibility for everything, and I don't feel like I am. I don't know how to make sense of all of this.
@beautifuldisasterx0 I don't agree with your therapist. Your dad is at fault. Why can't you blame your dad while at the same time taking responsibility for your own actions? There was this line in the show ER that has stuck with me all these years and it goes something like "If such and such happens, it will be my responsibility but it'll be your fault."
You can control your actions - not your feelings.
