How has your trauma been affecting you lately?
How has your trauma been affecting you lately?
For me...it's just always sort of there in the back of my mind and new trauma keeps coming from new (traumatic) events... I have some involuntary responses (ex. if someone is reaching to grab something in front of me, I either flinch or put my hands up in a defensive stance -- so depending on my mood, either in fight or flight mode). Even when my life "seems good", I still find myself struggling...I was diagnosed with depression, PTSD, & anxiety. I'm trying not to let those things drag me down, but it's been difficult. Even when my life seems "okay" I still worry a lot. The last time my life "seemed good", I lost everything. I was evicted, lost my car(s), homeless, had fall outs with family, lost temporary custody of my little for a year after I called cops on partner, starved, worked in toxic environments, unemployed due to health issues, was betrayed by "friends", and nearly had my existence deleted by someone I trusted and used to love...and this person caused permanent physical damage and I was told I might also have some brain damage, if it doesn't show up now, I was told it could show up many years later, so I have been cautious.
I'm getting back to the point of having my life back together, hopefully soon but I have a bit of trepidation that I could end up losing everything again...I have a new (lovely) partner who treats me well, I'm taking online classes to get my real estate license, I have (some) government assistance, my little one is doing well in school, but I have a short timeline to start working soon and find a new apartment...Or I'll end up living with my abusive family in a different state about 1,000+ kilometers away, who physically, verbally, and SA me in the past...I don't trust my (abusive) mother at all for what she did...but I am out of options. I wasn't working due to my physical health being really bad. I have been in and out of the doctor's office and hospital since Nov 2023 up to now. It's frustrating. I can't go to (regular) work like this, especially if I'm feeling extreme pain and bedridden... I want to be healed so I can provide for my family (little one & partner), but I'm not fully healed...I'm trying for remote work in the mean time, as going to the office is not viable for the moment.
To cope with all of this...I have been trying to eat healthier (and more often, I hardly eat...), I quit alcohol & MJ for over 140+ days, and recently quit caffeine since I get bad chest pain, and I'm currently on meds for depression & anxiety... Nothing for chronic pain has been helping, and I am thinking of getting a medical card for MJ and going back to that. It seems to be the only thing that has helped me. I wanted to quit to detox from it and for job related reasons as well but...I might go back to using it to help with both the physical and mental pain, been debating about it. At least I'll be able to move around, I'm usually glued to this stupid bed, because once I do something as minor as cleaning or go for a walk, the chest pain comes back and I feel severely fatigued and tired...which makes it difficult to do anything...
Anyways, how have you guys been coping lately? I hope you're OK. I'm just kind of in and out of 7cups to be honest...
@ImpudentIncognito I'm really glad that you're getting back to the point of having your life back together. I think that those thoughts of losing everything again are probably normal to have? Kind of like because it happened before so you more aware of that possibility? But you're also taking new steps with getting your real estate license. That's awesome!
@mytwistedsoul Hello, Soul! I appreciate your kind words & support. 💖The original plan was to move in with my partner but...I don't think he will get an apartment in time...He promised me that he would get a 2bd apartment for son and myself, but then he passed that off to me to do the apartment searching since I have "real estate experience"...Not to sound like a debbie downer, but that made me a bit disappointed, honestly...as he promised and I was counting on him -- since I was going through medical issues... So...I'm debating on whether I want him to move in with me once I get my own apartment. I know it sounds a bit selfish of me, but I have some trust issues after people would make promises, and all the work usually defaults to me...Not a fan...In the past, I dated my brother's friend (not my ex-fiance) for close to a year who ended up ghosting me...he used me for comfort and money pretty much. I paid his rent, his drinks PLUS his friend's drinks/food, and 1wk's worth of hotel room so he wouldn't go homeless and paid for basically whatever HE wanted -- and he'd ALWAYS be late to events and make me late for things...just disrespectful imo. It's a long story... I said a bit about it here: https://www.7cups.com/forum/relationships/General_2449/AvoidantAttachmentDoesfriendshipsrelationshipsmakeyouoverwhelmed_329197/?post=3556642
But anyways yeah, I'm thinking of filing for unemployment (again) and pressuring my doctor to make the doctor's note in on time, so I don't have to start over (again) on the filing. I am waiting on the disabilities, but it is said to take over 200+ days, and I appealed the decision for cash assistance, as they CLAIMED they didn't have all the info they needed but...I would keep calling them and they'd go "Oh, we have everything", only to be denied and told I DON'T have everything...Lol. At least there is phone records on that, so I'm going to fight it...Apart from that, I'm selling some (expensive) hand-me-down clothes from former coworkers that I don't wear -- some are worth over $100USD -- I probably won't get that much since some are used -- but some DO still have the new tag on there, luckily! Just trying to figure out ways to keep myself on my feet. I'm looking into remote work as well -- but most is real estate related and I thought -- might as well finish my license and get to it! Would be a better wage/salary if I did that.
Agreed...I don't want to go back to living with my (abusive) mother as she SA me when I was young and I'm rather nervous to have my son around her...I know my oldest brother is a safe person, but my parents...idk...They verbally and physically abused me for 18 years of my life until I escaped. My father mellowed out a bit over time, as he got older, but I don't know about my mother changing... I'm cautious. I rather have limited to no-contact with them -- at least, I won't go no contact until I pay my parents (plus older brother) back. I'm not going to be lame and take their money and run. I'm hoping that the real estate job will provide me with a comfortable life and allow me to pay off what I owe as well.
Again, thank you for your kind words and support. ♥
@ImpudentIncognito Tbh I don't think it's selfish at all and I think your disappointment is understandable. Whether you have real estate experience or not - he promised HE would get a 2bd apartment. He could have at least looked into some. And the fact that you were having medical issues at the time it would have been helpful. I can totally understand that there would be some trust issues set off by actions not matching words. I've recently been reading about incongruence because it sets off my trust issues. Plus you have a son to think of. You need to provide for him first and foremost and past experience had you footing the bill for everything. That's not a situation you would want to get into again. Have you talked with him about this?
@mytwistedsoul I was a bit worried that maybe I was being too harsh on current BF -- since technically it's not his responsibility to save me...we've been dating for about 8 months, so I wonder if I'm pushing to hard? We're older (30s) and I'm just wanting to settle down, but also trying to be wary if I'm going too fast, as it didn't work out in my past relationships... When he promised me he would get a 2bd apartment ASAP once he received his CDL license, I did lax up a bit and didn't worry as much...But yeah, once I asked him again about the apartment searches, he just went "I'm not looking right now" and "I need to get my endorsements first"...So...I went OK, when are you doing that? "I'll get there when I get there" was how he responded...I had a recent-ish talk with him about how dire my situation was, and he's NOW getting his endorsements, but before, things just kept coming out (ex. "My parents want me to watch the house when the pool guy comes. My parents want me to pick up nephew from school. My mother passed out from alcohol and I had to take her to the hospital, then my dad wanted me to drive and get her clothes"). I don't doubt that he did these things, but I'm slightly...frustrated? He keeps claiming that his family is SUPER abusive and toxic and how he wants to leave, but then when I question him on why he doesn't just live alone, he says he needs to "protect his nephew", so he can't...but then he turns around and calls his nephew a "brat" and feels done with him? His nephew's mother (BF's sister) is a drug addict and alcoholic as well, very violent and dangerous. She has been in the home and has held her son hostage in a locked room before. I keep telling my BF to report her to CPS and get her locked away. Even if nephew is a "brat" (he's only 6y.o or 7y.o.!!), he still needs help. And if his parents are abusive alcoholics, then nephew isn't going to be safe regardless...He said his mother slapped him before after nephew slapped his grandma on the butt so BF had to step in but like...Just call the cops? Document? My BF claims that his parents have mellowed out with age and aren't as bad anymore...His dad doesn't physically hurt his nephew, but his dad used to beat BF with a bat as a child and punch/kick him, and bruised him in hidden spots so the school wouldn't see it...his dad was an ex boxer and beat my BF up...until BF became bigger and stronger than his father, so he no longer can do that to him.
Sorry, I'm venting... I had to deal with child protective services with my child when I called the cops on son's alcoholic father (who is my ex-fiancé). CPS felt I was not a safe person, and believed that I would allow my abusive ex-fiancé back into my life and wanted to make sure son was 100% safe. Son ended up living with paternal aunt (ex's older sister) temporarily for a year and she was told me the ONLY reason she took him in is so she can write him on taxes(which I was able to report and take my money back on that...She used to steal my son's toys and clothes and give it to her daughter, who is a year older than him. Her daughter bullied him a lot). I would find son with scabs and bruises when I had visitations, and I reported it to the child protective services and notated that stuff with case aides with pictures, but they didn't take me seriously...and CPS said if I didn't like it, they'll just throw son into foster care -- which is scary, because the foster care system is WORSE in my country...it just sucked so much trying to protect him...my ex had less visitation rights than me due to his physical abuse to me, but his sister would allow him sneak visits, so he at least (sort of) was able to protect son from his crazy sister and brother-in-law. My son is not fond of his aunt, or female cousin nor aunt's husband. He seemed legitimately frightened of them...I want to put him in therapy, but he doesn't speak much and is in speech therapy, plus diagnosed with autism. I wish I could do more for him and I feel awful... I want to be the best parent I can be, and I let him down for staying with his dad for too long (3-4 years). I was scared of his dad, and he would threaten me each time I tried to leave, saying that the cops would take son away...I tried to get him into rehab and we did couple's counselling, but nothing worked and he became more and more violent.
So...yeah...I have some major trust issues...I'm questioning a bit of my relationship with BF. He'll say he wants to help me (and he has! He has bought me furniture, cooked for me, drove 2 hours down from where he lives to where I was when I spotted my ex-fiancé at my location since I was scared, and has helped me with rent when I had to call off work a couple of times due to illness), but this time...He has been dragging his feet a bit. I think since he never lived on his own for 30+ years, he has some trepidation. I think it might be best if we DON'T live together. I don't want to be that person to constantly push someone somewhere if that's not where they want to be and then they'll have resentment for me for pushing them too hard. I have many goals, ambitions, dreams. I won't sit idly by and let life pass by me...My BF has been upset that after his car accident (he's healed now) that he gained so much weight(in his words, he keeps falling himself "fat" and "gross" and it's upsetting to hear...I think he's handsome and amazing, but he puts himself down too much. I'll support him on his health journey -- as I am trying to recover too. I just feel sad to hear the self-defeating talk) and became MORE depressed, especially since he lives with his (abusive) parents.
Just wondering how to talk about him about my feelings without pointing fingers or making him feel bad. I'm going to try using "I statements" but...I feel that it really isn't his responsibility to help me, as...it seems like he's not 100% ready to move out of his parents...so idk...We're not married either (yet) and only dated for 8months, while being away from each other physically for 5 months (his car needs repair, he can't afford it, I live 2 hours away from him). We talk on the phone everyday but it's not the same seeing each other in person...We used to see each other every weekend just about, even when I was working (I had the ability to work from home and even worked part time).
Gosh lol, I turn this post more into a relationship one... I need therapy... 😅and probably going to go to the DV support groups again, I need to make sure I'm not missing any red flags and also making sure that I am putting (healthy) boundaries.
Again, thank you for listening, and apologies for the long ramble. I feel embarrassed airing out my relationship woes tbh.
@ImpudentIncognito I'd think it would be different if you asked him to look for an apartment. He promised you he would look. You're working on a timeline. And it doesn't sound like you were nagging at him. If the situation wasn't so dire it wouldn't be as bad for him to drag his feet
@ImpudentIncognito
Hey, thanks for making this thread! It's a very interesting and thought-provoking question.
Honestly, I feel like the way my trauma has been affecting me is bothering me a lot lately. Due to the fact that I grew up with manipulative friends and family members, it has caused me to have a need for control and charisma while ironically being rather codependent on the opinions of others. I feel very selfish for being this way. I cannot give up my ambitions for anyone else, but at the same time, I do not want to be someone that is alienated from those around me. It's a strange, complicated feeling.
Partnered with my neurodivergency, it makes it very hard to come across as "admirable" and "charismatic" due to my ADHD characteristics that make me seem socially anomalous and weird. It worries me to feel the highest of my positive emotions - I'll be too different from everybody else if I show my happiness. I'll be left alone again.
My coping techniques have not been very good. Honestly, I've just kind of been pushing this issue to the side because no one (including myself) has been able to help me with it. I'll cross that bridge when I come to it.
@iloveorangecatsmeowmeow I can relate to being surrounded by manipulative family/friends. I ended up being friend-less to be honest...I like people, but I like them only from a distance now. I have a hard time trusting others due to these experiences. I made a thread kind of about my feelings on friendships/relationships here: https://www.7cups.com/forum/relationships/General_2449/AvoidantAttachmentDoesfriendshipsrelationshipsmakeyouoverwhelmed_329197/?post=3556642
I don't know if you want to hear this but -- I think it's cool that you're just being you! You also mentioned that you don't want to give up your ambitions for anyone, and truly, that is admirable. Some people change so much and conform to appear "likeable". Personally, I don't think you need to conform to what other's want to appear "charismatic" or "admirable"(tbh, you seem admirable already in my opinion). I personally prefer people who are authentic and themselves -- no matter how "eccentric" they may seem (ex. I have been told I am "weird", "eccentric", and "mysterious" all my life, but now I don't care what people think). Friendships/relationships with others can be difficult too -- especially when trying to make friends, to try and compromise bits of yourself to make others happy...it kind of bites...I have decided I no longer want to do that anymore, I want to do whatever the heck I want to do. I have been told it's "weird" to go to movie theaters, restaurants, and other places alone, but I don't care. I'm just me, and I want to enjoy my time. Some people sort of gravitate towards that energy.
I can no longer be friends with people who think it's OK to be cruel, rude, or manipulative towards others. It goes against my morals. I had to drop my "best friend" recently who would drink-and-drive, steal, cheat on her current GF or whoever she's dating, and stalk (her abusive ex-girlfriend)... I just...couldn't be friends with someone like that...It sucks some days being lonely...but I try to hang in there and set more (healthier) boundaries...I have a LOT of trauma I need to work on tbh before I try and make friends again IRL. Nothing against them or anything, plus I'm going to move soon, so not really trying to befriend anyone IRL until I move and maybe get therapy...
Apologies for the long ramble. I hope you are able to find some coping methods. It sounds like you're going through some complicated feelings/situation, which bites. I used to sort of be there, and now...I'm all alone...I'm taking my time again when it comes to friendships (IRL) and also working on myself. I want to make sure I set healthy boundaries first. It's difficult navigating through (toxic/unhealthy) relationships/friendships.
