I’m alma I would love some help
Hi I am new here. My name is alma and I am 19 years old. I haven’t been to therapy for years because I have never gotten a therapist I could trust. I told my therapist something I did not want my mom to know and she told my mom. Since then I haven’t trusted therapist. I hope this is better. I have been through a lot. Please ask questions if you have any

Dear Alma:
Welcome to the Traumatic Experiences Support Community !
I am sorry about all you have been through.
It is difficult to trust someone to tell our deepest feelings and experiences, things we might not tell anybody else.
We feel vulnerable doing so.
It was very wrong of your therapist to disclose your secrets to your mom. Mental health professionals, are subject to a strict code of ethics and confidentiality. You can complain to the relevant authorities like state psychology boards, etc. or even courts (it depends on the place/state/country) that enforce these rules, if they misbehave.
HERE is their code of conduct in the US
In my personal experience, trusting your therapist is a necessary condition for therapy to be effective. I have gone to many therapists since childhood. I left many because I was not convinced that they were "the right one".
You need to feel some minimum of comfort in her/his presence. It should feel like you are talking to a good person, with good intentions toward yourself.
At some point, you have to trust wholeheartedly in your therapist, because you decided to do therapy with that professional, and trust is a necessary condition of any successful treatment.
Do it in the know that, if after some time you are not convinced about how your therapy is going, you can always change your therapist.
Also in my personal experience, most therapists are well-trained professionals and caring, compassionate people, that will do all they can to help you.
Keep trying until you find a good one. Don't give up on therapy. If you can afford it, it will help you a lot.
Tell your next therapist in the first session, why you left tour former one. Make it absolutely clear that confidentiality is first priority to you, and you will leave immediately after the smallest breach of information.
Besides that, you are right that you will find in this Community a lot of support, both emotional and on ways to better cope with your situation.
This is a very safe and caring community. You can post anything, and you will be treated with care and respect.
You can ask questions to more experienced members to better understand your issues and concerns, and ask suggestions for ways of better coping with their effects.
There are very knowledgeable members participating in this Community, that can help you a lot.
I would also suggest that you participate regularly in the daily Check-In section, which you will find pressing the oval button "Checkin Today..." HERE
The more actively you participate in these Forums, the more you will benefit from all the great knowledge and support this Community can offer you.
Please come back to me by answering this post in case you have any questions.
I wish you all the best !
Marcelo

Hey there Alma, welcome to the community :)
We completely understand what you're going through. We were also betrayed by guidance counselors, and now have intense trust issues. Unfortunately, we don't know how to help you begin to trust therapists again, but we're here for you to talk to anytime :)
