Navigating life after a traumatic experience with gun violence
I had a recent experience that has been incredibly traumatizing and difficult to navigate; TW for mentions of gun violence.
Less than a month ago now, a mass shooting happened at the place I work. I had to shelter in place, and there were a few periods where the noises around me made me believe I would not survive. Luckily I did, but the trauma following has been incredibly difficult for me to navigate. I have a panic attack every time I hear a loud sound - a thud, sirens, yelling/raised voices, etc. It has been difficult for me to find support around me, as it was a collective trauma for my community and as a social work practitioner, I have been spending a lot of times helping others navigate this experience for themselves. I have been doing my best to practice self care and engage in coping practices, but it is still hard.
I'm looking to hear from the community - any comforting words, ways you cope with similar experiences, or any support would be appreciated. I'll be returning to work soon, and while they have been incredibly supportive, I am still scared to return.
Thank you for taking the time to read this.

OMG, I am so sorry that you had to witness such a horrific experience. I can only imagine the fear and anxiety this must have caused you. I am so happy that you did not get hurt. I understand that the fear of going back to work must be even more stressful..I am WorkingitThrough, I am one of the forum leaders. I am glad that you reached out. We are so glad you are here.
I know you mentioned that you were a Social Worker, but trauma like this may require you to Get a Therapist who can help you process this/ You can talk to a one-on-one listener or just keep Posting in this thread. Please be safe and do a lot of self care❤️

Thank you for your kind response, I appreciate it!
I do plan to seek therapy. I'm in the process of being hired full time in the role I am in, so hopefully that will go through within the month so I can have some better coverage. I appreciate this space to be able to talk about my experience and chat with others.

You are always welcome to come back to this post and share your thoughts and feelings. I wish you much success in the new job. Especially since it comes with better coverage, I pray that all your hopes and dreams come true in this New Year.
Take some good self-care time for yourself. It takes time to get through the horror of what you experienced.❤️
