The effects of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) can be far-reaching. PTSD can be a debilitating disorder and its symptoms can have a negative impact on a number of different areas in a person's life. In particular, an individual's mental health, physical health, work, and relationships.
Individuals with PTSD often have problems functioning. In general, people with PTSD have more unemployment, divorce or separation, spouse abuse and chance of being fired than people without PTSD. Vietnam veterans with PTSD were found to have many problems with family and other interpersonal relationships, problems with employment, and increased incidents of violence.
People with PTSD also may experience a wide variety of physical symptoms. This is a common occurrence in people who have depression and other anxiety disorders. Some evidence suggests that PTSD may be associated with increased likelihood of developing medical disorders. Research is ongoing with regards this.
PTSD can greatly interfere with a person's ability to work and maintain relationships.
People with PTSD tend to miss more days at work and work less efficiently than people without it. Certain symptoms of PTSD, such as difficulties concentrating and problems sleeping, may make it difficult for a person with PTSD to pay attention at work, concentrate, stay grounded, stay organized or make it to work on time, particularly if their PTSD involves dissociative episodes.
Also, individuals with PTSD are more likely to have problems in their marriages than people without PTSD. Partners of people with PTSD may be faced with a number of stressors that go along with caring for and living with someone with a chronic disease. These stressors include financial strain, managing the person's symptoms, dealing with crises, loss of friends or loss of intimacy. These stressors can have a major negative impact on a relationship. Supporting individuals with PTSD is hard. Living with someone who is easily startled, has nightmares, and often avoids social situations can take a toll on the most caring family. It may be because those suffering with PTSD have a hard time feeling emotions. They may feel detached from others. This can cause problems in personal relationships, and may even lead to behavior problems in their children. The numbing and avoidance that occurs with PTSD is linked with lower satisfaction in parenting.
Many people suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder fail to seek treatment because of not having correctly identified or recognized their symptoms as trauma-related or not knowing their symptoms are treatable. Also, the inherent avoidance, withdrawal, memory disruption, fear, guilt, shame, and mistrust associated with PTSD can make it difficult to come forward and seek help.
Post-traumatic stress disorder can impact every area of a persons life, but with proper management and support, this disorder can be managed and treated.
