Hello my name is Dominique and I am 29 years old and when I was 16 I was sexually and physically abused. And lately I feel like because this trauma is still part of me mentally I feel like I don’t know who I am internally, or I don’t know where to start in my self discovery stage, I took the first step in forgiving him but not forgetting. Did I make the right move

Hello Dominique❤

That's a great question you have asked because there are a variety of opinions and experiences that I have heard and felt about forgiving. At the end, I believe it's a very personal choice to make...

Firstly, I am so sorry that you had to face such cruel things...whoever did this will pay for it no matter you forgive him or not and it is totally valid to get impacted by it. I believe (totally personal) that forgiving should come last, also, it is totally okay to never forgive. The healing through trauma will need processing and in the end you may choose to forgive the person after understanding everything. But it is also a thing that you can heal without actually forgiving but by just not letting that person's actions affect you...

Also, I am not very sure if forgiving will lead to forgetting, it's really hard to actually forget unfortunately, even after all the processing through therapies, etc. I was 16 when molested for months by a teacher now I am 21 I haven't forgiven that person but also that incident no longer affects me, I do remember the incident but I don't get much negative emotions about that...

In the end, Dominique would just say, take your time to mould your healing journey in whichever way you want there is no one 'way' fit all, sending healing beams❤

Thank you so much for that it’s not easy for me to do that, and I know the healing process takes time but I’m struggling with learning my identity after everything

I'm currently reading this book:

"Working with adult incest survivors. The healing journey" by Kishner and Rappaport.

It was written and published in 1993. Right when I was being abused at the age of 5-10.

I strongly suggest to look up for updated psychological literature about the topic. That will open your eyes and will make you see you're not alone. Great minds have advocated to study the topic in order to help victims to transform them into survivors.
