Victim.....or Survivor

February 23rd, 2017

Every 98 seconds and American is sexually assaulted. To think....this is our society. This is the culture we live in. The average number of rape and sexual assault victims 321,500 in the United States alone.

Now that word....victim. It has a connotation of weakness to it. Let's change it....SURVIVOR.

victim - one that is acted on and usually adversely affected by a force or agent; one that is injured, destroyed, or sacrificed under any of various conditions; one that is subjected to oppression, hardship, or mistreatment

survivor - to remain alive or in existence, live on; to continue to function or prosper

You have not been destroyed....you are alive, living, functioning. Now which definition better fits you? In replacing the word victim with the word survivor, you give yourself the strength and freedom that comes with it. The way you see yourself has a huge impact on the way you live your life. Living as a survivor instead of as a victim changes the view you have of yourself.

I love this! This sums up how I feel about it. I used to say I was the victim of sexual abuse. Now it's I'm a survivor of sexual abuse. The way you say it can effect the way you look at it!

Love this!

What is the first thing you think of when you hear the word victim? Survivor?

Victim makes me think small and weak whereas survivor conjures up images of strength, bravery, and prosperous.

The stigma of being a victim is just shame and guilt. Shame for being weak and not able to defend myself.

Thinking of myself as a survivor and really taking in all I have accomplished and all of who I am is awe inspiringly powerful.

Thank you so much for positng these questions.
