Bullies Are Hurting Themselves?

December 13th, 2017

It has been suggested to me by another individual, that one of the reasons that people bully, is that they are hurting themselves. Bullying another person, and attempting to cause emotional harm to another person, is a way to re-direct the pain and issues one is experiencing themselves, onto that person (the victim).

Does anyone agree with this particular notion? Any thoughts are welcome.

I think bullying is one of the many ways that people process pain. It can be used to make them feel that aggressive behavior is normal to cope with being treated badly. It can also be used to put yourself in a place of power because you find it difficult to have power over anything else in your life. Bullies also often harass people for being similar to them in a way they are ashamed of. When people bully others they are doing it to feel in control as a way to cope with their own stress.

I will try to keep this in mind when someone is bullying me.

Thanks for your input here. It sounds like you feel that a bully engages in their actions, to cope with pain, and to exert power and control. I think that your comments ring true, and that a bully's behaviour is not justified

I'm sorry to hear you have encountered bullying. I know it is not an easy type of an experience for any victim to go through. I feel that victims should strive to not take things personally, as others' negative behaviour does not have anything to do with them.
