Feeling guilty
Hello! I just started working at a planet fitness almost a month ago and have became familiar with one of members. She was very notorious for staying at the gym way past closing time, one of my coworkers once told us that she had them in there for about 30 minutes past closing. I think I’ve got to experience this once or twice with her (I am a part timer and only work weekends) the days that I do work my coworkers also work the same shift every week (we are students so it aligned with our schedules.
she pretty much enters the gym at 9:45pm to shower and doesn’t leave until she’s finished, most of the time when it’s 10pm (our closing time) she’s just starting to blow dry her hair, no matter how many times we let her know that we are closed, she just says okay she’ll be finished, and continues at the same pace. I hear this has been going on since February.
I started having a big issue with this when me and sometimes coworkers would have to take Ubers home, and because we get off so late we like to make sure by the time we leave the building we can just get into our rides. We can’t predict what time the lady leaves so sometimes we end up having to wait outside.
about two weeks ago, I seen the member come in and I took the blow dryer, trying to make sure we can make it out on time today. Idk why I did it that specific day, but I grabbed it and brought it to the front desk. At 9:50pm the member came to me asking about it and told her I didn’t know where it was. She then proceeded to accuse and yell at my OTHER coworker, accusing her of stealing it.
i told my coworker that I took the blow dryer priory to her being yelled at, she wanted to let her case build up. My coworker suspected that she automatically accused her because she works extra days during the week and the member knows that she has an issue with her (we all do but she sees my coworker more)
the member was saying that we were being childish, but that made me think that she knew very well what she was doing if she knew what kind of reactions were possible from us, leading to her accusing my coworker. But anyways, this went on her file. She already had lots of things on her file but I never read through them.
the other day, she came back. No one said anything and we just let her do her thing. A couple of more “it’s time to goes” and we’re out the door by 10:15. I walk outside first and she walks past me saying “you can’t rush me, I’ll take as much time as I need”. So I message the work group chat that she’s buggin me outside of work, and they add this to her case
at first I was feeling a pretty bad because this reaction is because I took the blow dryer, but I don’t think I should have to put of with the disrespect. I get written up it I don’t follow a policy, so she might as well get written up for not following our policies too.
but today, while I was cleaning the restroom my coworker came in with me because she felt like I was going to be targeted by her, I was. While I was cleaning she started calling me a liar and talking to me about the blow dryer. At this point it’s been two weeks and you’ve been harassing me about it since, plus I only work on weekends (which is the days the chooses to come) my other coworker who works throughout the week says she doesn’t show
but anyways I let her rap then I walk away, my coworker pulls me into the back room and asked what she said while I’m telling her, the member starts banging on the door and my coworker opens the door and the member is naked trying to hand me my phone(idk why she had my phone, I had it by supplies I was cleaning with). She shuts the door and asked the member to put clothes on, she kept trying to push the door open and told my coworker to grow up. Meanwhile another member witnessed this and was like “wow” and she asked us we’re we okay.
Also, I found out a bit before this happened some other members came up to the desk to complain about her being indecent and her behavior being concerning in the gym. Our managers basically said trust and believe she will be dealt with, im pretty sure she will get banned.
I hoped it would have blown over, ive been nothing but respectful to her until today, and the worst thing I’ve said was “that happened two weeks ago, you still remember that”? When she was lecturing me in the restroom. but she still made it the bud of the topic.
im pretty much feeling guilt for taking the blow dryer, I am upset that this lady has disrespected me on multiple occasions. I’m glad this will all stop, but it’s keeping me awake on how all of this “justice” was started because of my lie.
is it okay to feel like this?

I think in the moment you might have thought it would have just hurried her along instead of causing some mental issues by the customer. It shows you are a good person to feel bad that a lie is still bothering you... many in the situation of dealing with the public learn to lie as it is easier sometimes dealing with difficult people. I think you should forgive yourself for the lie.
Honestly your management should have dealt with her earlier and swiftly.
were you and co-workers paid for the time having to wait for her? if not i would remind the management that you by laws in most places required to be paid for being unable to leave on time because a customer. If they had to pay the OT or extra hours they would have dealt with this sooner.
