I’m posting anonymously because I’m dealing with a lot of overlapping pressures and I’m struggling to hold it all together mentally.
Over the last year my life has become a pile-up of stressors rather than one single issue. Financial pressure from a business that’s in real distress. Legal action and court proceedings that I’m having to defend, with deadlines, letters and constant uncertainty. HMRC pressure that never seems to ease. Creditors and aggressive callers chasing money I simply don’t have right now. Waking up to missed calls, voicemails, emails, brown envelopes. Rinse and repeat.
Individually, I know people deal with these things. What’s breaking me is that they’re all happening at the same time.
I’m trying to run a business while it’s on life support. Trying to protect staff and family. Trying to make sensible decisions while my nervous system feels permanently switched on. Some days I feel calm and logical. Other days my chest is tight, my thoughts race, and I feel overwhelmed by a sense of impending doom even when I’m doing the “right” things.
I don’t feel hopeless, but I do feel worn down. Mentally exhausted. Like I’m always bracing for the next hit. Sleep is patchy. Concentration comes and goes. I replay conversations and worst-case scenarios far too often. I’m functional, but only just.
What I’m looking for isn’t legal or financial advice. I have professionals involved where I can. What I need is help with coping:
• How do people mentally separate themselves from constant external pressure?
• How do you stop your identity being swallowed by debt, legal issues and business problems?
• How do you stay present with family when your head is full of numbers, deadlines and fear?
• How do you calm your body when the stress feels permanent rather than temporary?
If you’ve been through prolonged financial or legal stress, especially as a business owner, I’d really appreciate hearing what helped you mentally. Even small things. Habits, reframes, routines, or just knowing I’m not the only one who’s felt this way and come out the other side.
Thanks for reading. Writing this alone has helped a bit!

I hope you get some comforting words and support from business people who might have been through similar.
But I want you to know, I'm sorry you are struggling and have been through so much and I genuinely hope things improve for you 💜
