Real friendships are difficult, and with the increase of social media and decrease in direct human interaction are becoming increasingly so. In just the last few years studies show people are going from having many acquaintances to only a few, having five or six good friends to having one or two or nine. Today it is common for people to have no one they are close to. Sad but true.

Movies and TV create false realities where there are lots of friends and interactions. Movies and TV usually rely on having a lot of characters to keep the action going. They are STORIES made up to keep our attention, not reflections of reality. They invent characters at will, put words in their mouths, create tightly controlled situations -- all false--and our minds think that should be OUR actual reality. It isn't, so don't fall into the trap if believing your life should look anything like Hollywood fiction.

Half of us are by nature Introverts, and that's a very good thing. We bring a lot that is good to humanity. Introverts lose energy when around other people or stressing circumstances and need a lot of alone time. If you are content with one or two people in your life, enjoy being with them but find you quickly tire and need to pull away you might be an introvert. Go with your needs and feelings; it doesn't mean you are a bad friend, you are wired the same way as half the population.

I used to believe there was something wrong with me because I was not more gregarious, but I learned Introverts tend to have fewer but better friends. We may SEEM neglectful, but it's only our natural need for personal space. Extroverts are more lauded by society because they NEED a lot of people around them, and are more interesting characters to create movies and TV shows about and they are more visible in society. Both Introverts and Extroverts are rqually valuable to society, neither are better.

I have found Benjamin Franklin's advice most helpful: “Be good to all, kind to many, familiar with few, friend to one, enemy to none“ In my experience of many decades i have found this excellent advice.

Lastly, be who YOU are. It is enough. You are a real, live, complex human being; don't try to compete in a made up cartoon world.
