The Internet and Friendship Lists.
I have always had a really hard time maintaining online friendships. Most online friendships end after the first session. At least that is how it has been for me, in the past so many years. Way back I used to get some that would stay with me for a month or so and die, or maybe a year and then die.
I don't know if this is a sign of a mental illness or not. I don't like looking at a long internet contact list. Because it hurts me to see a long list of people who are no longer available for chatting or emailing, or commenting. In order to have a real friendship, it needs to be something that remains in some active mode. At least that is how I feel. If my friendship is based on a pen pal like email system. Then I am ok with response times that take a week or maybe two. But I got to admit that the longer it takes the more it hurts. The reason why it hurts me is because without the activity I soon get lonely. I used to think if I had a huge list of people then there would always be some activity. I learned from experience this is not the case! I have been active on some social networking and even some forum sites, where I had hundreds, and sometimes even thousands of people on my friends lists.
I remember when I was active on a social anxiety forum, I had the largest friends list of anyone! People literally posted in the forums that I was the most popular person on that site. Little did they know, I sent out lots of friend requests, and almost nobody turned it down. So my list sky rocketed there. My hope was to turn some of those people into real friendships. At the end of the day, I ended up leaving that site just as lonely as I was when I joined it.
In my personal experience, the internet has not been a good place for me to make and keep friendships. what is wrong with me? Who knows. Maybe I'm just a bad friend. Or maybe I'm just someone with really really really bad luck. I'm sure if you get to talking to me, you might form your own conclusion.

Internet friendships can be good and bad ... for some it is a way to connect ... yet it is somewhat impersonal and many do not see as a long lasting but a here and now type thing....
Some may leave sites thinking they got all they could out of it... and not really remember " hey i was wondering what happened to tryingtosurvive2024" maybe they only contacted you thru those sites.
It is not personal....... much like work friends when you or they change jobs and people say "hey call me keep in touch and yet they don't" This happens to everyone good friends/ superficial friends .... as time passes we want to reach out maybe we wonder ... do they remember me ? what will we talk about ... ooh they must be busy ....... and on other side often same wonder "how we are doing? " but assume we are busy or moved on ....
Some times I wonder how many of us are lonely because we did not reach out ....
I did a couple of times through social media / text .... one person claimed they did not remember me ... so ok I moved on .... other person took a second and was so thrilled asked me tons of questions we caught up and then time went on again did not last.
@toughTiger6481 The way people treat each other, it is like we are just a bunch of objects. I have feelings. I know that do, because they hurt all the time.

I agree with you up to a point .........we used to hold on to friends closer as we had limited circles depending on where we lived or our network.
Part of the thing with a keyboard and a screen our circle expanded ...... is all over the world and millions of people.
So it seems like so many to chose we do tend to treat others as random objects we cross paths with. I know i wanted a deep close friendship i did same things i was on forums and sites and even in person neighbors / co- workers felt lost. I gave up and answered one more question from someone.... this person became my best friend and the person I want to share all things with we are hundreds if not thousand miles apart. do not give up.
Hey👋🏻
we can be friends!
@donnknw We can, but I haven't figured out how be friends on this site. If I'm correct friends online require lots of communication. How do most people communicate on this site?
I kinda feel the same way, I try to connect with people, but it doesn't seem that deep or lasting.
I think I've accepted I'm boring, or hard to talk to?
