One of my favorites is anemoia, or feeling homesick/nostalgic for somewhere you've never been. I never get to use it but it resonates with me.

@GreenLime3141Β  Yes!Β The obelus (Γ·) originally comes from the Greek word obelos, meaning a small pointed object. Though some argue that the symbol used to be a part of the Egyptian heiroglyphs. It was at first used by ancient scholars to mark doubtful or incorrect text. Then inΒ  the middle ages, scribes used it to indicate separation. Then the Swiss mathematician Rahn introduced it as a division symbol in his algebra book and it stuck. Okay there is another debate that it was the English mathematician Pell who introduced Rahn to obelus. Though today , it isΒ  mostly replaced by the fraction bar (/) but it’s still common in basic arithmetic (which i absolutely loathe)

Wait did you know all of that from your head?

azurePond March 7th, 2025

@GreenLime3141 Yes… To be honest, I looked it up a few weeks ago when my baby brother asked... What’s that symbol?...Β  I told him it was for division, and then he asked if it had a name like "asterisk" (He's a genius kid, I am a proud sister)β€”which we had just learned about a few days earlier. So... I looked it up, found the word, read the history… I might have mixed up some of the scientists’ names, but I think the rest is right. I’ll probably forget most of it by next month...Β  but I’ll remember the obelus part!
