I was 7 or 8. It was xmas eve and we were staying at my great aunt's. Since we arrived last minute and I was raised to not expect anything, I was prepared to just watch others have their time with gifts and what nots. To my surprise I was given a gift. It was a simple plastic tea set. I always wanted a tea set! I started crying and hugged her several times. She was surprised and apologized saying that all stores were closed in town and that's the only thing she found. She thought it was such a simple gift that maybe I'll be disappointed. I was so grateful, though. She was confused. But, I saw tears rolling down her cheeks. Later, and in private, my mother explained. She said my great aunt had been upset earlier because her grandchildren hated their gifts and had left in a fuss. They were very spoiled. I was the only one that thanked her and made her day!

I treasured that tea set for years. Specially because she gave it to me. She passed away when I was a teenager.

As I grew older I understood that, she thought I made her day, but she actually made mine.

When someone gave me their time

My favourite gift would be the surprise birthday party my friends threw me in 7th grade, in a classroom. Had an amazing group of friends, one of the happiest times in my life. The party only went for 30 mins (during lunch break) but they brought in little cupcakes and snacks, and even planned little party games. They put in so much effort - definitely the most thoughtful thing I’ve had happen to me.
