PTSD what to do after an episode?

Hi guys, I’ve just had a PTSD episode and it lasted around 50 minutes. I’m not sure what the best plan going forward is. Do I stay at home or go out and see friends? I have a friend who is staging a comedy night. On one hand, I want to distract myself, but also feel it might be overwhelming for me and worried I’ll burst into tears.  On the other hand, I want to stay in and self-care, but also think that being alone by myself at home might make me overthink and may lead me to have another one.

Should I stay or should I go?

Hey, first of all I'm really sorry you're going through this. That sounds incredibly heavy, and I want you to know how strong you are for just making it through those 50 minutes. PTSD episodes can be absolutely draining, and the fact that you’re reflecting on your next steps shows just how much self-awareness and resilience you already have. Both options you're considering going out or staying in are valid, and your thoughts about each are so real. Wanting distraction makes sense. So does craving the comfort and quiet of home. Here’s what I’ll gently offer: maybe think less in terms of either/or and more like what feels doable right now? If the comedy night feels like too much but the idea of being around someone safe feels good, maybe reach out to a friend you trust and ask if they’d like to hang out somewhere calm. Or even just talk on the phone for a bit. You don’t have to go full social if your nervous system isn’t ready for it. If staying in feels like the better choice, maybe structure it a bit make a cozy corner, put on something familiar and soft, have tea or something warm, write down how you’re feeling, even if it’s messy. Let yourself exist without needing to be okay right away and remember crying is not weakness. Overwhelm doesn’t make you broken. You’re healing, and that doesn’t always look tidy. Whatever you decide you’re allowed to change your mind. There’s no wrong choice here, only what’s gentlest for you right now.

I’m proud of you for reaching out. That’s brave. Be kind to yourself, okay? ❤️
