My grandmother gave me her wedding ring. It's just a plain thin band. But I lost it in the haze of raising a newborn & have not found it in a year.

My guitar. I've never had anything that I loved as much as music. It's kept me going through the worst of my depression and I am forever grateful to it.

@Rioz I really like this because I relate to it very much. Getting a gift from someone that meant something to you is something irreplaceable.

I was working to help POWs who were being held in an internment camp in the north of Ireland. One day I wrote to one of them, "I wish I could know every one of you, all of your names, because history has a way of erasing the people who most deserve to be remembered, and if only I could know all of you, you couldn't be erased, becaus I could say, "That man existed. He was real. I knew him."

Near Christmas, a package arrived. In it was a book written by several POWs who had been there in the worst conditions, during the hunger strikes that had taken so many of their lives. When I opened it, I saw that it had been signed with a little message from a couple of the guys I'd known the longest. I was moved beyond words. As one does with new books, I began casually flipping through it. Only then did I realize that the margins of nearly every page were filled with messages -- over 200 of them. It had passed through the hands of nearly every man in the camp, and each had taken the time to add a signature or a little message. They'd heard about what I'd said, about wishing I could know them all, and over 200 men, living uncertain lives in an internment camp came together to grant that wish.
