I've been a Listener here for more than a year, but it took me some time to get involved in the Forums and Chats. I only began quite recently, and still find it a bit complicated to navigate the site, as well as intimidating to enter new social situations where I am joining a group of people, but slowly slowly I am starting to engage more.

Thanks for joining us. That feeling of anxiety is very common for the first time and I experienced it as well, but it sounds like you're making an effort and have a desire to help others so there's something to be proud of. Sometimes feelings of wanting to be the "best you can be" can lead to avoidance of difficult situations. If you take the plunge and find yourself in a situation where you don't feel comfortable there are Listener Support Rooms - https://www.7cups.com/listener/connect/conversation.php?c=k2dmeXmbkuJO42uXh1iY, which you can quickly navigate to via your private chat room by clicking on the question mark (?) in the chat room.

Things might seem overwhelming at first but most conversations are a little awkward when you're meeting someone new anyway so try and remind yourself of this if you feel like you're bombing with someone a few messages in. I felt this way on my first chat but the conversation ended up going for a couple of hours once we developed some rapport. People that come to us often want to be heard and have their feelings and situation validated and acknowledged. However, there is a great reward for helping others and developing community and this reward far outweighs the intial feelings that prevent you from clicking on one of those requests. We are all in the same rickity boat together, so you're not alone if a conversation is more diffcult than usual and if you ever need help then feel free to follow me and the many other listeners here.
