The Importance of Self-Care
Mothers are expected to care for and nurture their families. But moms can sometimes overlook themselves. Self-care is important, especially at this busy time. You are probably already tired, moody and overwhelmed. Your body is also healing from the birth. Self-care can help you become and stay healthy both physically and mentally. It is important, so that you can care for your baby properly.
It might seem like you don’t have time for even a shower or a meal, but there are some easy ways to fit in self-care.
Basic Needs
In the first days with your baby, make an effort to care for yourself. This includes simple actions, such as brushing your teeth, resting, drinking plenty of water and eating healthy foods. Your focus should be on healing from birth.
Then, work your way up to showering, taking short walks and other basic needs to help you stay healthy and boost your mood. Soon you will feel like doing more activities you enjoy.
Be careful not to neglect your own basic needs. Remember: Exercise and sunlight are two of them.
Ways to Feel Like Yourself
It’s common to be so focused on the baby that you forget some of your usual interests or pastimes. Once you feel healed from birth, take time for the things that make you feel like you. This may include:
- Spending time with friends
- Calling loved ones on the phone or through video calls
- Shopping trips or other errands
- Exercise
- Spending time with your partner
- Attending events and gatherings
- Hygiene and grooming
- Journaling
- Reading, listening to music, a favorite podcast or show, or other entertainment
Finding Time
You don’t have a lot of time in a day to do all the things you need to do. Caring for yourself means making self-care a priority. You may have to choose it over other tasks. Here are a few ways to find time for self-care:
Take advantage of naps. Sleep when your baby sleeps, or fit in a 10-minute meditation or stretching session. It’s okay to leave the dirty dishes in the sink for later.
Seek support from a partner, family members, friends or a babysitter or baby nurse. Ask them to care for the baby for short periods of time, so you can care for yourself.
Meet other mothers. Join a new mom support group. Getting to know other mothers can help you find support if you need it. It can also give you time to socialize with other adults.
Bring the baby along. Pack a bag and bring the baby for walks and errands. It can be good for both of you to get out of the house. Some mothers join a gym or recreational facility with a nursery, so they can exercise or take a fitness class while their baby is cared for.
